the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, i find it funny that the employer owes you, i hear it all the time. anyway you need to lookout for yourself, but the employer only owes you the agreed upon wages, at the end of the day. everything else is a bonus upon doing a good job. funny how that works.

No doubt, but respect goes both ways. If they don't respect you, don't give them any.

Doesn't mean fawk all if they don't treat an employee right. You have to earn the respect for notice.
the employer should get respect not earn it with the employee, like a father son relationship if you will. the employeee is the one who has to earn it i sign your freekin pay check you will respect me or find another job. too many people out there today that think they should get respect as soon as they start a job and treat their job like a freekin drop in center, come and go as they please, 20-30 min chit breaks, extra 5 mins at coffee, have cell phone in pockets when supposed to be working etc. if i worked like that when i started working , as well as many others on the site i m sure, i would of got taken behind the shop for an adjustment, if you can call it that. and if you didnt like it to bad lots of others like you looking for money.

however on the same note if a guy gives you 16 yrs obviously he is a good worker or you would of canned his azz during the recession, yopu obviously also had some respect for your employer or you would not have stayed there for 16 yrs.
seasons change he quit his job moved on good for him and good luck at the new endeavor.

Yes the employee needs to earn it first, by working hard, showing up on time, etc. But if they do and get no respect there is nothing wrong with moving on and giving zero notice. I've left one job on the spot, rest i've said i'm here as long as you need, but they treated me right. Three months of hard work is long enough to earn respect. Crap like getting an hours notice for overtime, when they knew dahm well days in advance. Saying it's mandatory to work overtime and weekends and saying "to bad" when you point out it wasn't that when you agreed to the job. Working through a unpaid lunch and refusing to pay for that extra time. Won't put up with that garbage. The biggest thing that pissed me off was the working for free for a half hour.....sad that people don't have the balls to stand up to some employers like that.

couldn't agree with you more.come and go as they please, cell phones, extended coffee and lunch brakes, just finished having this conversation today with a couple of the guys. oh and my favorite so far is how i hired a fella about 3 years ago that i've know for a while, long story short we kept him out of jail buy paying his 13,000.00 fine.... not going to get into it,,,, but he's of value and some what of a friend so we helped him out. he's paying us back with money from every cheque and makes me feel like we owe him, and by that i mean keeps asking about bonuses for year end... i don't get it.

Personally as some who does the hiring....If I was hiring someone who did not give the previous employer two weeks...I would be leery to do so as that is what I expect from someone when they leave my place of business....just my :twocents: as an employer. But as an employer you should also be giving the person the right amount of holidays as required in the labour laws for that province.

Technically I wasn't even required to as I was a temporary employee, and part of the reason I left was because they could lay me off without any notice. Again, not something disclosed before being hired.

I would agree notice is needed, but there is exceptions. I know how it works, I work for my dad who owns a company I get to see both ends. Workers who sit on cell phones, smoke, ones who quit in the middle of the day because they are told you can't smoke when your working.

I treat leaving a company how they treated me throughout the time I worked there. Only never given proper notice once.

And the same can be said That Good Employers want good employees.....

That being said you can't be a good employer if your not paying you appropriately based on the LAW. As well you can't be a good employee unless you work hard and give Notice of leaving a company.

I believe an employee is to respect their employer first, kinda like a kid should respect their parents. But as a person grows with a company the respect should grow Mutually. However the employer writes your checks so they are always one more step above.

Respect is needed from both ends!!!

the problem is that i have been in the industry for over 35 years and know more then him the owner of the new place appreciates people for what they know not the bottom dollar

Hmmmmm.............sounds like you should be the owner!! Can't stand those dumb asses that put up the equity to start a Co., pay interest on loans, for what, just to give someone else a job.
Way better off where they don't worry about the bottome line, good luck!!
