Yesterday we could have sat there in a long sleve shirt. No kidding. No wind and -3. 2' of fresh and bluebird skies.

We did see some carnage though. One Rev on saturday hit a rock and shoved the motor back 2". You just had to be careful where you went. I didn't hit anything all weekend.

On sunday we were filming and when I turned around for another run a sled came ghost riding behind me. A guy came racing over and said that his buddy was cut pretty bad. He had hit a hidden rock and got cut just above the knee. Had to bring the bird in to fly him out. We did manage to get him onto a sled and back down to the cabin though.

Hey does anyone know if your supposed to contact the Canadian Avy Center when you see an avy? I seem to remember hearing that. It was a little un-nerving to see an avy like that where we often ride.

Thx

M.

Yes They definatly want you to report all slide activity. they keep a very good record of everything that happens in the snowpack it will also assist the forcasters in forcasting future problems or warnings to other sledders in the future. You can contact the Canadian avalanche association they are located in Revelstoke.

Hope your buddy heals up quick, sucks to injure yourself anytime but especially right at the start of the season!

How big was the avy? BIg enough to injure? I'm surprised to hear this as temps have been relatively mild and stable.

Try and get as many details as you can to give to the Avy center. Slope angle, how deep/wide the fracture was, elevation, temperature, sunny, how far it ran, which aspect (direction) the slope was facing, and what set it off - sled, skier, cornice, natural. They can use as much good info as they can get. It's good to let the center, and other people in the area know, because there's a good chance similar slopes could go. Also, if you saw the slide and everyone's safe, let other people near-by know so they don't go beacon searching when they see sled/ski/board tracks heading into where it ripped out.

I reported the avy to the CAC. If you look at the pic it's right down to bare rock, that's scarry. What was even more surprising was the guys still riding in the area that it came down.

It was good to see everyone kick in to help when a rider gets hurt. Good people in this sport.

Cheers

I was one of the guys who helped carry him, and it was NO trouble! Very glad to help, maybe it's me next time. The wife keeps me around for sled mods, driving to the hill, and lifting heavy objects. Not that it's a problem, she almost never gets stuck anymore!

Hope the guy recovers quick and has no permanent damage except for a cool scar to impress chicks with :d
