not gonna happen overnight.
gotta have something in the interim. at this stage, the war is in russia’s favor so getting putin to the bargaining table isn’t guaranteed which means even more aid to ukraine if he doesn’t play along.

no one’s winning. any victory for russia will be a pyrrhic one and then they’ll be dealing with guerilla warfare for years if no deal is struck.
putin wants a pro russian gov’t in ukraine. that’s a main goal and I don’t see that happening with the devastation that’s occurred.

They are. They haven’t been beaten yet in 2 years. That’s a win. Give it to the Ukraine. They should have lost in a month if you compare the size of their military’s.
They should have had a built up military if living next door to Putin was so dangerous, and not come begging every week to others. Do you think zelensky would care if we or the US were being supposedly invaded and donate billions?

I don’t really care. I don’t want to see Putin steamroll over whoever he pleases either. If they are killing Russians loyal to Putin I’m fine with it. I feel sorry for the Russian kids forced to fight for him getting killed that don’t want to be in a war. Most of Putins army didn’t volunteer to kill their neighbour. They were forced to fight or coerced.

Putin apologized this morning for being responsible for the downing of that passenger jet in Kazatland (spelling) killing 38 passengers. It’s still not clear if a missile took it out or debris from a missile hitting a Ukrainian drone that did the fatal damage to the jet. There were Russian passengers on the jet it’s been reported.

i'm guessing the plane itself was inadvertently targeted. i haven't looked at the flight path stats but it's unlikely a drone was that close to the jet when it was hit.

Apparently they were actively targeting drones in the proximity. I saw a pic someone took from their window of the wing it there was a small chunk of it missing

There are numerous videos showing the shrapnel holes in the tail of the passenger jet. Russia is using proximity-shrapnel anti-air missiles. The missile gets close to the plane and explodes, releasing fragmented shrapnel that pierces the plane is hundreds of spots and does enough internal damage to take the plane down.

The shrapnel does not go very far, being little bits of metal. I wasn't there, but I'm willing to say that there is no way that they were targeting some Ukrainian drone and the airliner was "collateral" damage because it was too close. To hit the airliner in this way, the operators must have targeted it directly and fired at it.

The only question remaining is what the missile team was thinking when they targeted the airliner. It's quite possible they mistakenly thought it was a Ukrainian drone - which makes them incredibly incompetent and reckless. It's also entirely possible they knew it was a passenger jet that had nothing to do with Ukraine and shot it down. Russia did that 10 years ago, so they have a history of it. Reference:

Further demonstrating their evil callousness towards civilian life, when the flight crew got hit and announced they had a major emergency, the Russians decided to not let the aircraft land in Russia, which forced it to fly over the Caspian Sea to reach an airport that would allow them to land. The only explanation that fits this behavior is that they wanted the aircraft to crash into the sea en-route so they could "bury" the evidence at the bottom of the sea.
They continued their deplorable actions by announcing that the airliner simply flew into a flock of birds and that is why it crashed. When the evidence of the anti-aircraft missile was there plainly in photographs of the wreckage, they had to change their story and admit they shot it down.

I can see where it could have been a mistake in the fog of war though. The Americans shot down one of their own F18 Super Hornets over the Red Sea the other day. They were engaging multiple missiles from Houthi rebels in Yemen and mistakenly shot down a carrier Hornet enroute to launch on the missile sites. Fortunately the pilots ejected and were recovered in the water with just minor injuries.

planes have transponders, have much larger radar signature than drones, operate on known flight paths and maintain contact with air traffic control. the russians prolly did zero deconfliction.

All fair points. Even the Americans have shot down jets by mistake, in addition to the one you mentioned.
