Put a damn helmet on

well. ill give you a little story about helmets ..

one day i was riding a old ass snowmobile. and for some reason i had a helmet on it didnt fit that well but it saved me quite a bad fate.

i was riding this old beater really fast WOT down a snowed icy road and it kicked out sideways "old bar track" when i let off the thottle, and ended up flipping right ontop of me i was doing about 60mph and was pinned underneath it and sliding down the road with this snowmobile laying on my helmet it was the only thing between my head and the ground i could feel rocks pinging off of it.

now after that i never rode anything without a helmet again as i would probably be getting called hamburger face atm if i didnt have it on.

since then i may not have rolled anything or smashed my head off any rocks but i know what can happen. and people are riding on borrowed time as something eventually will happen at the worst posible moment.

my 2 cents.

Went riding around home today with a group of 5 quaders, I was the only one wearing a helmet, and the rest of my gear. I watched with horror as 2 of the quaders were doubling on some of the side hill trails, I could see the tires barely making contact with the ground! At the first break, I was asked why I had riding boots on, my answer was the same reason I wear a helmet, safety. I have seen the wrecks and don't really care to relive many of them. I am getting tired of living in a world were common sense has to be enforced through rules. My family rides with proper gear ( helmets ) without question each time we ride. So it is about time that individuals make wise decisions when their safety as well as the safety of others is concerned, no forcing decisions, just making smart, wise decisions automatically. Everybody benefits and we look like we care about our sport. Helmets save lives. Sorry about the rant, seeing to many quadders without helmets, lookin' bad for all of us.

Well said use common sense wear a helmet your not invincible. You may think you are but its stupidity that makes you think your invincible.

See what i mean. Most people agree. that`s because the ones who are "too cool" for helmets are dead or have serious head injuries. If a 800 pound machine lands on top of me a helmet may not save me but it will sure give me a better chance.

Whats a $100-200 helmet compared to $10,000 to $100,000 in hospital bills, or $5000 in funeral costs.

The price of a helmet isn't the issue, its peoples attitudes. A paradigm shift in peoples attitudes needs to happen - and it is slowly, but not fast enough IMO. We were at the jet boats in Whitecourt on Sunday and right beside us were a bunch of hillbillys riding around on quads with no helmets, thinking they looked cool in front of everyone.

My thoughts - I agree with the comments that non-motorized backcountry users will use any ammo they can to restrict our movements in the backcountry. If you haven't seen that by now, you're living under a rock. Garbage, trail destruction, safety issues, trespassing, etc, its all ammo against us to sway public opinion and public opinion is what government policy is built on. If you haven't seen that you are dead. Safety is everywhere in out culture and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to leave the 50's era at home. My nephew is 6 and my niece is 3 and they both know that when we take them for a ride the quads don't start until everyone's helmets (including adults) are on and buckled.

Everytime someone dies, the same debate rages on and someone says something and people say "this isn't the time to debate the helmet/seatbelt/drinking/etc issue". Seems like there is never a "right" time to discuss it....its time to stop burying your heads in the sand. If you don't want to hear it - don't read this thread.

I think its stupid but hey - we each make our own choices and no one is going to follow you around all day and hold your hand and make you wear a helmet if you don't want to. If you kill yourself don't expect sympathy from your fellow riders though, and if the media walks up and asks me what I think about someone that died because they didn't wear the gear that was proven to save their life - I will be telling them I think that person was an idiot, and please don't judge me or my fellow riders based on the actions of one individual.

Who are you to pass judgement? Maybe these people as adults judged the risks to be small enough they decided they didn't want to wear a helmet?
You want a law passed so that people who want to decide something for themselves don't have that choice?
I swear this country is going to be like the UK in a few years.
Look at the stats I posted above, you have a better chance of drowning than killing yourself on a quad. Maybe pass a law that says everyone who goes near water has to wear an approved PFD first?

It's a freedom of choice people.... something we as canadians do not have enough of..... do I agree with not wearing a helmet???? absolutly not.... Do I want to have a choice????? you bet your azz I do, just because I choose to wear a helmet does not mean I would want to give up my freedom not too. for children under 16 it should be manditory.

Lots of S&M members (me included) had no issues cruising around Outwest campground and back and forth from the river & overflow at the jamoree WITHOUT HELMETS..... obviously the risk was deemed negligable, bet there would have been some pizzed off peeps if SRD had been walking around handing out fines.....

All said and done, I believe in helmets. I also believe in the right to choose. The issue that scorches my azz is that when someone does go down without the gear, it gives ammo to close areas. Feel free to destroy your brain, just keep the riding areas out of it.

lets also be realistic aswell.

some guys doing 20kmph on flat ground putting to point b from point a probably are not going to get hurt from having no helmet on.

but any time you ride off camber or at any kind of speed its a risk to ride without a helmet obviously.

i like to keep things in the realm of reality aswell.

if i see some dude putting down the ditch picking garbage with no helmet that doesnt exactly erk me.

when i see someone doing 90+kmph down the ditch without a helmet that makes me cringe.

I don't know. I do agree somewhat, but we were riding a trail a few years back, doing maybe 15-20km/h, because it was tight and a little overgrown. My wife's machine layed on it's side and bucked her off. Her right front tire hit a stump in the grass, and threw her in a split second. She never got hurt, but she quite easily could. Sh!t happens fast, and when you least expect it.

i fail to see what helmets have to do with closing trails. if i don't wear a helmet i endanger my self. when trails close there reasons are litter, enviromental damage, noise complaints


to put it bluntly, if i kill my self by not wearing a helmet, thats one less quader they have to worry about.

So one more point for this. I wastalking to my sister who is a EMT and her two friends who are a EMT and a Paramedic. They said the two reasons most people are killed are seriously injured are #1 drinking #2 is not wearing helmets. And usually the 1 and 2 go together

Well it all comes down to personal choice!! I wear my helmet and I ride with those that dont!! including my damn boyfriend and I try to give him chit about it but.....its his choice. But with that being said he makes the kids wear theirs ALL the time and will still ride without one...its a case of do what I say not what i do or ill kick ur azz!!

So in the end (which could come sooner without a helmet) it is still their choice and Ive wasted enough time trying to nag my man into wearing his i just say screw it do as you wish but sign this life insurance please.....
