Prince George- One man is missing after an avalanche in the Torpy Mountain recreation area about 100 kilometers north east of Prince George. The avalanche occurred at about 2.30pm. Sunday.
Two adult male Prince George residents were riding in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area, when an avalanche occurred. One rider was able to avoid the avalanche; however, his partner was unaccounted for.
RCMP contacted the Provincial Emergency Program, who activated Search & Rescue. The sledders were approximately 30 to 40 km from where they off loaded their snowmobiles. Due to concerns with the distance, the weather, daylight and the snow pack in the area, Search & Rescue personnel were unable to begin the search on Sunday.
At first light on Monday, November 13[SUP]th[/SUP], 2011, an avalanche expert will fly over the scene to determine if the area is safe. There is a possibility that explosives may have to be used to loosen unstable snow before the search can begin. It has been reported that this area had over six feet of snow, three feet of which fell in the previous 24 hours before the avalanche.

Oh No.....not already! Let's all be careful out there. This much snow, this quick, combined with everyone having the fever is a perfect recipe for tragedy.

His airbag failed to deploy. And his beacon appeared not to be sending. According to the CKPG news.

Yes, X-it, you are right. Most of the times when there is a tragedy, rumors often run rampant. I had known this man to be an experienced sledder, that carried all the proper equipment. We are still in shock. This man was a icon in the sledding community, the logging community, and the race car community. I don't think there was a soul in this town that didn't either know him personally or know who he was. It is a huge, devastating blow for this town.....and I don't think we can ever forget. :( Godspeed Dallas. My heart goes out to your family.

this was something we always use to check BEFORE we headed up the trail
would be suprized how many guys didnt even turn them on yet, because they werent in the "alpine, so ne need".....sheesh.....really????

its never a good time to lose a sledder, especially this early in the year
but this is when it is most dangerous IMO
heavy snow in short periods of time, followed by clear WINDY bluebird days spell disaster

i know we are al itchin to get out, but lets play smart guys/ladies

so sad to see an experienced and prepared sledder to go down like this
just proves that NO ONE is immune out there

thoughts and prayers to the family and friends

take care out there everyone

I think you would be surprised how many sledders do check there beacons before leaving the parking lot. We used to never check them, then after taking the AST 1 we started to, That first trip out of the 6 guys that came 2 of the beacons were faulty (Didn't emit single even though they were on) and 2 guys had forgot to turn theres one. It is a simple procedure and I wish more people would do it, While parked on the side of the trail waiting for my buddies to drive by to test there beacons other groups would go by and I would pick up guys going buy that would not emit a single and when we catch up to them on the trail I would mention it, Most guys were thankful and found out they forgot to to turn there becons on, But I also Had one guys tear me a new one and told me to mind my own buisness.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to the family and Friends, Stand together in this time of difficulty

I would hope to see no faulty beacons, when did they quit? I have heard of more than one guy sending his beacon back because it was not working. Their reply back, you where treating them to rough and abusing them???? What the hell do you think an avalanche is going to do to your product. Like i said before Scary. If my memory serves me correct one of the guys was DaveB
