Don't buy the cheapo pullers from PA, get the good harmonic balancer puller that is way beefy (i forget the name but the brand has a red packaging - its NOT Powerfist). I broke 3 of the powerfist pullers trying to take a flywheel off once, bought the big one and haven't looked back since. The cheap ones just broke, maybe I'm just too strong? :D

I got the $28 puller from PA that is 40+ pieces and comes in red packaging. I was looking at the $20 puller, but for 8 bucks, figured I would go with the bigger one. It worked great on my 08. Sounds like I made the right choice in pullers. The washers bent right away, but that's it. I kept thinking with each turn of my breaker bar "This is gonna be loud when it goes". Its fun trying to keep the motor from moving when you are doing this on the shop floor with no help. Got it done though :)

Just make sure prepare a list of things to check/ask and go with your gut feeling.

Oh and bring a small extendable mirror and flashlight to inspect the bottom of the block :)

Put a long bar through the bolts (between the puller and the flywheel) to keep the crank from turning and this will also help you keep it in one spot on the shop floor when you are flying solo....:D been there done that......

I can assure you that is not a BRP rebuilt engine. They wil not accept a block that is in anyway damaged. A buddy just went though this. His had a small hairline crack and it was junk.

I use a good puller and tighten up as much as I can and put some heat to it (too hot too touch but not glowing) to soften up the locktite. Then another good pull on the wrench and it will pop right off. It sounds like it broke something but it is all good.

Again this was a factory shortblock purchased from Mr R's (was in Milo now Lethbridge) it was purchased the week after the last motor's connecting rod bearing went out on December 20th weekend, 2009. There is NO repair that was done by me nor was there anything noticable when installing. The motor mount comes flush to the bottom of the block so if something got between the block and the plate it would rub. Additionally if the rod bearing started to go again, the rod would hit the case and bow it out before breaking. This could cause this mark on the case. Has Barnes put a ohm meter on the case in this spot to see if its conductive? I don't think JB weld is conductive but aluminum is. Additionally has Barnes shown a photo of the inside of the case? I have requested a copy of the receipt from MR R's but with the change in ownership and Ken being in Revy so much they have yet to send it to me.

For those who called me a lier and for Barnes to even suggest he got screwed from me, you must not know me or you would not suggest it. If I kept the sled, this would have happened to me too and I would be just as mad but at the mechanic who checked his sled over and did not check the carb boots.

in my opinion, if the carb boot was torn upon purchase from teth air, i cannot see the motor lasting for 250 + kms. again something is fishy here. i'm thinking barnes may start looking to his friends borrowing his sled, just not adding up. who would run a sled spewing this much oil,

Looking at that picture it seems none of the cracks go through the rubbed/welded/ jb weld our whatever spot under the case. I think if it was just a rub the crack would go right through the spot, it seems that the cracks start from the rub/repair.

What exactly isn't adding up? What do you think is fishy? Yes, i will say the carb boot caused the blown up engine, but i can't tell you yet if the bottom end bearing went first, or what happened. I've been too busy at work this week to even care to look at a blown up engine, that i can't ride this year. Once again, i'm expecting you to call it fishy... Your more than welcome to come over and strip it down to the crank for me.

As for the amount of oil running out of the exhaust, its a dirty 2 stroke.. bad exhaust gasket? YUP! I'd spent enough hours wrenching on the thing, i was kinda hoping to enjoy riding it for a bit rather than spending my whole season turning wrenches on it.

As for you Chris, if i get what your laying down about "my mechanic"... I brought Dave because he has a few more years sledding experience than i do, but checking out a sled in the dark on a sunday night, probably wasn't the smartest move on my part. Why before you sold it, didn't you inspect over the sled? You did and i quote say it was "Ready to ride" in your Ad.
What about the exhaust gasket? Did you miss over that too? The Carb boot? Even though you told me they were updated... along with all the other bits and pieces i had to go and repair to actually get this sled ready to ride?

I turn my own wrenches on all my toys and vehicles, I'm sure if i can inspect and repair a 25000lb armoured vehicle, that i can turn wrenches on my own sled. Getting use to the equipment is one thing, taking a man's word for his work is another. That is one thing i will never do on this site again.

as i said, something sure is not right here, if you have paper work stating your side of story, you should be talking to lawyer. someone is hiding something, as that motor was not brp rebuild, and sent out like that. teth air or his kid, someone is blowing smoke. time for lawyer.

Honestly, i'm past that. As i said.. used is used. And after 11 pages, i think everyone has gotten the point that i was trying to point out in this topic, which is be careful what you buy, it really doesn't matter who from. I wasn't trying to slag Chris in anyway for being a vendor on this site, but just trying to prove a point.

When someone says the motor is new... fine, 1 season is 1 season. If that is 4000kms or 400kms, it all depends on how it was taken care of. One thing i will mention is that Chris never did mention how many kms he put on the sled since the new factory short block was installed. And i will go on to say, he told me he ran the second hood he included with my sled, without gauges for a good part of last year. Soo to tell how many kms are on this motor is a guessing game.

You are right Imdoo'n, it does not have the stamp from BRP, but once again, its one man's word against another. Chris says its a BRP factory block... yet no stamp? Maybe i'm missing something? Maybe its in a different spot than where i looked? As i mentioned this is my first year into sledding, i don't know all the tricks and secrets of the trade YET.

Like it said, its a learning experience, same with this topic.

As i look on the main page, and noticed the view count is up over 4,000 now.. I'd like to hope someone picked up something out of this topic other than all the wining and bitching that actually went on in this topic.

I've been on enough forums and racked up enough of a post count, that i've gotten over going on the internet looking for attention. For anyone who thinks i came on here to slag Chris and get some attention for myself, your completely wrong. Like i said many posts ago, if anyone is bored on the weekend and would like to come and have a look at it with me. MAYBE even if you own a stator puller, stop on by, there's beer in the fridge.
