I can't believe all the people driving and texting. There should be an override that when your vehicle is in drive, the text feature is disabled.

BTW. if you get into a controversial accident, and the other party suspects you of texting while driving, they can check your records and if you were, you could be at fault.

I think they will be keeping a close eye on REAL infractions.

And those DUMBASSES sitting at a green light looking at their android... they will get an earfull from me.... Time to install the train horns.. LOL

so let me make sure i understand this right,
this means i can no longer drive down the road,surfing on snow and mud,watching a crazy canadian vid on my ipod,blue toothed to my stereo, driving with my knee and eating my large DQ blizzard, while making sure my make up looks good in my rear view mirror, and texting bogger off my blackberry cause the damn i phone is tied up on snow and mud?

good point, yet not really the same is it?

When you reference a map at a red light you are still in a clear mental state and can actually make sober decisions... you also actually notice and realize if the light is green or red. you are still perfectly capable of rationalizing situations

driving drunk you are in an impaired state of mind and not able of making proper decisions... you cant do anything while drunk... barely even stand up in some cases

Since this law has been passed, I'd really like to see someone enforcing the driving hours for truckers. So many times (more so at night) I see semi's all over the road. It's not windy, and I hope, for the love of god, they're not drunk... And I know there's tons that run multiple log books and get away with the extra driving hours. IMO driving tired is equally as dangerous as driving drunk. Maybe these sort of laws will keep local RCMP busier so they stop giving out petty fines for tint and other little infractions.... Frustrating when there are real dangers on the road.

Talk on the cell phone through the red light.. then most of the green light. It is time to go when you hear the horns honk behind you. Next light same procedure. Or try riding a bike with idiots on the cell phones....dangerous

Hahahaha, pulled up to the lites on the way home from work yesterday, and in the car beside me, all 4 occupants were talking on cell phones(guess todays kids can't just have normal talking conversations, but they have to do it through their cell phones)....... Too funny. I tried to take a pic on my iphone, but i was being distracted driving and watching the lite

You can actually get an impaired charge for driving tired or falling asleep at the wheel

Next problem is enforcing it.

I know a few cops in Saskatchewan that claim it's nearly worthless to charge anyone with using a handheld when driving because of the investigation time and making it stick in court. It's been law here since Jan.1, 2010, and everywhere you go, there's still a huge number of people yapping on a handheld and driving. Apparently the $280 fine and 4 demerit points don't scare anyone.

Some people can't think and chew gum at the same time, and this is no different. These laws weren't intended for anyone with any common sense. If everyone had it, this wouldn't be an issue.

We are talking about drivers who decide to put themselves and others at risk by watching movies, browsing for and downloading 'apps', applying makeup or shaving all while trying to navigate through traffic.
These activities are not specifically restricted under the law:
■using a cell phone in hands-free mode - this means the device is not held in the driver's hand and is activated by voice or a single touch to the device
■using an earphone — if it is used in a hands-free or voice-activated manner
■drinking beverages, such as coffee, water or pop
■eating a snack
■smoking
■talking with passengers
■listening to a portable audio player – as long as it is set up before you begin driving
■using the following:
◦a GPS navigation system – as long as the system is affixed to the vehicle and programmed before you begin driving or the system is voice activated. You cannot hold the unit or manually enter information while driving
◦a collision avoidance system
◦a gauge, instrument, device or system that provides information about the vehicle’s systems or the vehicle’s location
◦a dispatch system for transporting passengers
◦a logistical transportation tracking system that tracks vehicle location, driver status or the delivery of goods for commercial purposes

As far as I'm concerned Ipods should be banned as well. I was in Calgary a few month's ago and there is a guy at a red light with his earphones in groovin' to the tunes, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel while everyone behind him is moving for an ambulance that was behind us. He never moved until the light changed much to the dismay of the ambulance drivers.
