Would like to hear any recent experiences, might pick up a side by side this year, x3 or defender, dont need the best ride but dont want to beat my self up every trip.

I have a 13 Maverick which works well . We rented 2 maverick trails this winter in Arizona for a couple days riding , mountain rocks trails , bit of small hill climbing , and desert trails , no mud. I hated both of them. Not many good things to say other than they ran fine, power was ok with stock tires and rims , but gonna be underpowered with any kind of higher rubber. way to small for 2 adults, way to low, way to narrow , needs more suspension for big wheel hits, no leg room , not much about them we liked. Also took 2 900 mavericks same time , we switched back and forth , 4 for 4 favouring the mavericks by a landslide. FWIW .
Have had a defender since first model year and the thing has been fantastic! The low end clutching and gearing is incredible, you can run some big muds with no worries about burning belts.
I'm running 29's right now but might do a cheap bracket lift to fit something a little bigger under it. I also like how you're not sitting on the ground and easy in and out access with the seats being up the way they are. Certainly no maverick but it works for me!

So picked up a 2020 Defender XMR and all I have to say is wow, quite the beast of a machine. I love the fact that my girls, wife, dog and I all fit in the cab. Took my little girls out for a little mud. One loved it the other not so much but I am sure she will come around.

I have the promount plow, still working on getting it to plow just the way I want it. I may have to get the plow frame extender due to the height of the XMR vs Stock. This extension will then bring the plow to a better angle. Other than that I have built my own bed side extender, (actually in the process of making a change so the dump box still works) and I am going to get some KC Cyclone LED Lights to replace the rear circular reflectors.

sweet. Thanks. I’m thinking of getting the same machine. Any regrets getting the xmr over the other models? Anything you’d do differently? Any options or accessories you wish you’d got? How are the tires? Any vibration from the lugs at lower speeds? Also when you get a chance can you measure the overall height? I have an overhead clearance concern in my storage place. TIA.

So the measured height is 82” I have the springs on the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] setting.
I went with the roof which is mandatory in my opinion, the dash storage nets (you could do without them), half windshield (I will be buying a piece of plexiglass to cover the top half for winter use), half doors in my opinion are a must. I also went with the Flex Promount plow, like I have mentioned above I think I require the frame extension, but we will see how my adjustments work with the next snow.
Other additions have been the 52” light bar. Some extra trim on the door to help with the rattle, and my rear bed side extension, which now does work with the dump box.
Yes the tires tend to vibrate the machine at slow speeds and I am thinking of going to a set of BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 UTV Tire or Maxxis Carnivore (ML1) Tires. But this will be a big maybe it doesn’t bother me that much.
I have absolutely no regrets, the only thing I am looking at getting is the front rack and modifying it to work with the front bumper. Maybe a side mirror as well.
The fact that I can get both my kids 5 and 6, my wife and dog with me in the cab makes this machine awesome. It comes with everything I need for working the acreage and hunting and fishing. I can cross pretty much any body of water, with the front and rear lockers and the current tires it climbs like a Billy goat, I just had about 800lbs worth of logs in it yesterday and it went straight up my neighbor’s hill in his back 40, he was pretty sure we were going to winch it out.
Buy one.

Excellent. Thanks for the answers. They’re definitely a sweet machine. I’m 99% sure it’s the machine I’ll be buying, just have to now start the dance with the dealers to see who is gonna get my business.

Any pics of the plow mounting plate installed? Trying to decide which plow to go with on my defender XMR.

I also just got the KC Cyclone lights installed, and the front rack (but it did require some "Bending" to fit the bumper.

The one problem I had with the regular defender is the plastic floor boards. I drove over a broken loose stump it flipped up and destroyed the floor pan. I mean basketball size hole. If the xmr’s are unprotected there I would seriously look at lining the front fenders with puck board or checker plate etc. Was a $2500 fix as the cab had to be gutted to replace. Just a thought.
