Well if you don't fill your truck with fuel its gonna leave you at a snails pace as well. Fill the def tank and you won't have a problem. I put 20L into it at a time and it lasts months.
Not completely true, my def was full but it still put me in limp mode and I had to limp into swift current at 8mph on a Saturday with no mechanics working at the dealership and then rent a vehicle to continue on our trip for the weekend. They had to reset the computer/flash it and then two weeks later did it again. Ended up being a faulty sensor or solenoid. Truck had 40,000 km and now has 59,000 and has not done it again.

It's just my logic, you've got that much less to go wrong. I work on the trucks for a heavy haul company, mostly 2012 and newer, and majority of problems I see are emissions equipment related. And as far as EGR, I just don't like putting sooty diesel exhaust back in the engine. Deletes might not be best for the environment but IMO they're better for the engine and do away with the most problematic parts on them.

No matter weather or not u keep the def tank full, half full ect

All it takes is one sensor, bad def fluid, even not great fuel


Will limp mode a def truck and leave ya pretty much walking


So is it worth taking a chance keeping it on there??

Well, I'm thinking I'm swung to a GM unless I get a screaming deal on a Ram...planning on holding out til about Oct/Nov unless something special comes up. Any recommendations for Edmonton area stealerships? Or someplace further giving better deals?

Put on a set of nerf boards, and it's completely hidden. WAAAAAAAY better than Ford's 1 ft square gas door, not to mention the rest of the butt ugly truck.
And ford's less fuel tank space with 20 l of def there

Why is the emission stuff so bad, do you not care about the future of the planet for your kids, kids?

I have 165,000km on my LML with emissions and I don't mind it at all. No soot on the exhaust pipe, I can stand behind the truck and breathe the air. It doesn't smoke out my whole block like my 04' cummins...

I like the EGR valve, it warms the truck up quick in the winter.

Oh ya, tell that to hundreds of people I see, stuck in salmon arm cause the def light is on a speed limited to 89 kmph and have 100 km till 55 kmph

Deleted trucks run better, oil stays cleaner longer ect
Personally I leave the engine stock till it is out of warranty (GM just extended there injector warranty to 193,000 km). I am one who wants to save the planet. But can anyone tell me how recirculating exhaust gas back in to the engine helps the environment. Especially when its consumes more fuel and contaminates engine oil, which reduces oil life and increases engine maintenance. In the 70s GM istalled a Air Injection Reaction (AIR) pump on all there engines. They stated that it was to promote after burn in the exhaste system which was a crock of sh#t. It simple diluted the exhaust gas to the point that it met the pollution control laws of the day and burned a whole lot more fuel doing so. I had a 2001 Duramax came factory with out EGR no new truck can match that fuel economy today. I just don't get how we can burn more fuel and pollute less. I think they have us chasing or own tail!!!

The EGR system reduces the NOx or nitrous oxide emissions of the engine, NOx are created because oxygen combines with the nitrogen in the air under high heat and pressure, so by circulating exhaust gas back into the engine there is less oxygen to form NOx as well as less heat involved in the combustion cycle to form the NOx. Now the argument is being made that the EGR system could be removed from new diesels completely because the SCR (DEF) system also removes NOx by injecting urea into the exhaust and passing it over a catalyst to turn the NOx into water and nitrogen.

But ur 01 was no where near the same amount of power as a 2011 d max

Power takes fuel, plain and simple



Nox and particulates ( the coal soot) are what are not good

But a cleaner truck burning 1/3 more fuel is way worse, think of the fuel trucking, the plant that makes it ect...

Good thread here. Lots of good info

I have heard some people getting good mileage with the new trucks. Some don't It's a tuff call and I don't know a whole pile about it so I am learning. Looking at a new truck in the future to.

Just a heads up. NOx is not Nitrous Oxide. It's Oxides of Nitrogen. Not that it really matters. Just letting you know.

The new GM's warm up incredibly fast on the remote start. But it has nothing to do with the EGR. The idle elevates, a mode similar to a trans brake is engaged (two gears at once) and the exhaust brake is on. This really loads it up and the engine and trans warm really quick. Faster than driving actually.

Soot and NOx have been deemed the greater evil vs CO2. The methods of reducing them result in more energy use. The emissions system on my work truck was flawless up to 194k. Adding 19l of DEF every 14k was really a non issue. I feel for the guys who get a dirty running truck where the DPF works overtime wrecking the economy.

Yes good point but my driving habits haven't changed in fact I am a little less inclined to get after it now then back then in 2001. Yes your right about the power but under the same load I would hope new programing and improvement would move the fuel economy the other way.

Hey Teth don't forget the bi annually front brake replacement on the older dodges. My last Duramax HD went 718,000 km had one $2500 front end job two alternators one set of brakes and one water pump and one set of injectors under warranty. Ya they cost more but in the long run for me it pays off. You are right about the main bearing surface, the Cummins is a industrial engine it does a fantastic job in the Bomag packer running tacked out all day. One last thought easy on the country music. Take it from the old man she don't think your tractor or your truck is sexy. LOL

Wow, I kill a set of brakes on my car every year but never a set on any of my trucks. My 2001 Dodge did suck to stop though with a load on and with its rear drum brakes. Some more modern GMC's also got stuck with rear drums. I would avoid those.
