Natural gas fire rings for a deck.

Been looking but I am having a hard time finding fire rings for the patio that burn NG. Lots that sell conversion kits but my understanding is that for fire insurance, they need to be installed by a certified gas fitter. I don't want a propane one as I have a NG outlet on the deck.

What's out there and where are the deals?

Not sure what the rules are in BC but in Alberta in most municipalities you can pull a permit as a homeowner and do the gas fitting yourself and just have the inspector come by once it's done. As long as the conversion kit is CSA certified I don't see an issue with it either.

I re-did our entire house right after we bought it so we could have gas appliances everywhere. The builder wanted like 4 or 5 grand to do it, I did it for $450 in material and 2 days of my time.

Not to hijack, but i was recently looking at something like this for my deck. I currently have gas line with valve and push clip connection to my BBQ, is it possible to just tee off that to run one of these? Was looking at propane mostly but this got me thinking. Not real plumbing literate...

Just used mine tonight, if you have the hookup so nice not running out of propane. I just unplug the BBQ and plug in the fire. Guy who installed line told me a tee with two connectors would be considered two connections and I would have required two permits instead of one. I only use one or the other anyways so easy to switch which one is connected.

Yes and no. Will it work, almost certainly. Will it meet code, maybe depending on the gas line size. The CSA code has a chart you must follow based upon gas consumption and length from the meter to determine pipe size. The longer the run is and the more gas the appliance uses the larger the pipe size required. When I did mine I went from 1" to 1-1/2" feed into the house, even after the furnace and tankless water heater tee off I still have a 1-1/4" header to feed the garage heater, dryer, stove, and BBQ, this is because I had to size the entire system to the longest run (as per code), which is something like 70 feet from the meter.

That is the idea. I just noticed that that appliance comes in both NG and propane. When I looked yesterday, I only noticed the propane one.

I have the wall outlet and an 8 foot hose just waiting for the unit.

Just to expand on that, I had my city gas line size increased because I added a stove, dryer, deck heater and plan a few other things. Cost was not cheap but was needed.

In bc for insurance purposes you will need a permit pulled Doug. So in your case find a fitter. Unless you have a buddy there that will sign off. Or you fly under the radar. The deck fireplaces are pretty neat actually. Just try and keep them covered when not in use or at least as dry as possible.

May want to monitor that underneath a covered deck. I clear the snow minutes after I light my bbq at -20c. Heat rises..

No, I would not think so. That fire pit would be no different than a Nat gas BBQ, IMO.

Builder of our house only brought the gas in as 1” when we added the gas dryer it pretty much maxed out the btu rating of the
1” gas line so couldn’t hook up the bbq right away I ran a secondary gas line and power for the second garage around the house before we did the sod with a tee in the line for another riser under my deck for the bbq

after the valve on your current set up you should be able to use a hose to the fire pit with no permit required
if you were to hard pipe it to the fire pit you would need a permit and inspection
