Not sure, I was under the impression that each wheel had it's own independent motor.

no it has a gear box and cv axles.

interesting. How does the Tesla control the torque side to side?

It uses an open differential and applies brakes to the side that is slipping. Works really well on ice (with good winter tires).

This is one of the main reasons I opted for the dual motor.

The only EV that will have a quad motor in the near future will be the Rivian. Tesla will have a tri-motor out late this year. Will be interesting to see how they compare in the real world.

Looking at the video with the Audi, it appears that the Tesla system is better modulated than the Audi.

Tesla has far better electronics engineers than any automaker out their today, so this stands to reason.

Nvidia (which is the world's largest and most advanced PC graphics card maker) used to build the autopilot modules for the Tesla cars that interpreted the data from the cameras that was used to operate the car. Tesla has since designed and built their own hardware with a 2.5 times increase in performance over the Nvidia module, I think this speaks volumes about what Tesla can do. Tesla is a tech company that makes cars.

And yet snowflakes and bugs freak the system out.

Tesla designed the new FSD computer (sometimes called HW3) but samsung will be producing it. This is common among tech companies. FSD computer is 10x more powerful than the nVidia set up (which is what I have). It runs 144 TOPS (Trillion operations per second). Tesla has a clear advantage in self driving tech because they make the car, write their own software, design their own hardware, etc. Very similar to Apple in their vertical integration. I hope to get the computer upgrade in the first half of this year.

nVidia will likely make other car companies computer hardware but since they have to build a solution that's more generalized it will probably be a bit more bulky than what Tesla will be using. Check out this video of what the FSD computer sees...

Never had a bug problem in 46000km. The wipers go over the front three cameras and there is a heating element surrounding them as well. The nozzles for the window washers are built into the wipers so usually if you get that slushy mist on the windshield you can clean it off. The worst problem I've had with snow is it can collect on the front bumper and cover the ultrasonic sensors but you can just go out and bang it off or put a special coating on to prevent that. I also had a problem one time with ice blocking the camera but that was my own fault for forgetting to run the mirror defrosters which help those 3 front cameras. Haven't had a lot of trouble with the side cameras either however you can use autopilot and hold your lane without the use of them anyways. If side cameras are blocked you have to manually change lanes and navigate on autopilot will not work.

Consider how slow traditional auto manufactures are to integrate simple tech ...8 track deck as an upsell when cassette was common, cassette player when they were practically obsolete, etc.
Tesla will likely continue to lead by a wide margin as tech advances much quicker than mechanical systems ..

Didn't Boeing build the Max plane and write their own software?
