Never had a bug problem in 46000km. The wipers go over the front three cameras and there is a heating element surrounding them as well. The nozzles for the window washers are built into the wipers so usually if you get that slushy mist on the windshield you can clean it off. The worst problem I've had with snow is it can collect on the front bumper and cover the ultrasonic sensors but you can just go out and bang it off or put a special coating on to prevent that. I also had a problem one time with ice blocking the camera but that was my own fault for forgetting to run the mirror defrosters which help those 3 front cameras. Haven't had a lot of trouble with the side cameras either however you can use autopilot and hold your lane without the use of them anyways. If side cameras are blocked you have to manually change lanes and navigate on autopilot will not work.
My MIL as well as my sister both own a Tesla, and they both complain about severe problems with the system. Last spring my sister was driving home and it was a may fly hatch, the bugs freaked the system out so bad she pulled over. They both complain about the system every time it snows hard.
I just know when we were looking for an ev for my wife, we drove many, and I was not impressed by Tesla. Ultimately she chose a Bolt, I don't like it, so since my wife passed away I traded it in.

If a bug disables autopilot you can just continue driving it like a normal car. There is no need to pull over.

Never had an issue in snow that prevented me from driving. I don’t know why you’d want to use autopilot in sketchy winter conditions anyways.

You said they have an advantage because they build the car and produce their own software. I just am showing an example where that may not be an advantage. If Tesla had a third party involved they could have other perspectives in their designs.

I couldn’t disagree more.

Wow a guy who as been through the mill and tested a bunch, wonder how many hours of ev talk you have had to endure..haha. I hear you on the auto pilot hang onto the dash board, but maybe your sisters have paid for the computer upgrade in cash and not received it yet, i can see a bolt owner commenting on that one. Did they get their cords stuck in the charging port at 46 bellow and snap off the release tool yet? Whats with that pressure buffeting? Might want to remind them to krown spray their rusty a and b pillars. Did you white knuckle range test that bolt? Sorry for all the questions, i am sure it is not your favorite topic.

I just had autopilot drive me 30min through Calgary traffic with no interventions. Merged on/off stony trail, passed slower vehicles, and changed lanes to stay on the correct route. Maybe you don’t know what you’re talking about?

Oh i have been behind the twitching steering wheel enough times. Maybe a computer upgrade will help, if that ever comes or some painted lines on our highways.

I think I would have major trouble trusting the auto pilot. Lol

If you have had too many teas and put it auto pilot to go home could you still get a DUI?

System uses painted lines to figure out where the lane is. If it can’t see the lane it’s not going to work very well. Through billions of miles of data and machine learning it will eventually learn how to drive on roads without painted lines. Basically if you try to use autopilot on roads with poor markings you are setting yourself up for failures. Most times if the lines are bad it will not let you engage it but if it starts good and then goes to **** it will attempt to figure it out. You can verify what the car sees on the display as it will show how it is interpreting the data from the cameras in the vector space. FSD computer should improve this a lot.

Trust but verify. Hands on the wheel and pay attention. Every time you engage autopilot it says to pay attention and keep your hands on the wheel. Some people confuse this message for “play a game on your phone and ignore what’s going on”. It states clearly in the terms of service that the vehicle is not autonomous.

So In the end it’s the driver that is responsible for the vehicle. It already happened where a drunk guy passed out on the interstate at 70mph. Police pulled in front of him and slowed down and then arrested him.

I believe that you are intentionally trying to be obtuse on my point.
The system has some serious issues!
That is my entire point.
Tesla lovers swear it is perfect.
Its far from perfect.
That is my entire point.

My now deceased wife had her heart set on getting an ev. I would have done anything for her, so we tried out many, and she ended up with a Bolt. It wasn't my thing, but that wasn't the point, it was hers. The car gave her zero issues in the 7 months that she drive it until passing away last month. I traded it in, it was still like new, but I prefer gas, not waiting for a car to charge. But when we test drove three Tesla's, we failed to see what the hype was. Way overpriced for what they were. If we had been going to spend that sort of money on an ev, it definitely would have been the Jaguar that would have been in our driveway, not a tesla.
I see sometime in the future when ev cars are improved, them being more viable. But they need to have 700 kms real world range, not book range, and then charging back to 100% in 20 minutes or less. The self driving part of the tesla seems more like a gimmick than an actually useful feature.
The Jaguar we tested seemed to be leaps and bounds ahead of the teslas we drove IMHO.

It’s not perfect. I’ve never said that ever. If it was perfect it would say “autopilot engaged, take a nap”. It’s better than anything else out there by a long shot and improves with each update. Autopilot is now included for free with all new purchases. If you enjoy the experience of driving manually you don’t have to use.

Damn loop holes.

So auto wont work on gravel road then? I didn't actually investigate the auto pilot system at all when researching the EV
