Hi guys,
We've been setting many newbies up with ATVs lately. Many of you have an infinite amount of seat time compared to myself. I'd like to write an article profiling the most common operator errors ATV riders can make.

Thank you in advance.

Another great idea for a write up, loading and unloading are always a point for accidents, unsecured ramps, 2wd, not steady on the throttle, using the locker during water crossings gave me a few good flops from snagging hidden obstacles and causing quick bar twists and subsequent flops on its side, inspection and cleaning prior to rides kept a few winch lines from being used when frayed or major component failures, don't quad much anymore but you'll get a ton of good feedback here I'm sure

Where to start....

Hitting a rock or tree root while climbing a hill.
I like to carry a piece of chain to put over the winch cable, that way if it breaks the cable falls vs whipping back
going fast into an unknow puddle / pond
Tire plug kit(a must have)
know how far your fuel will take you and or carry extra fuel
understand the limits of the machine, water depth re vents and intake
Know what limited slip, locking diff and locking hubs are and what that means to the ability of the machine
It works on a race track and works resonalbly well on sleds but " when in doubt pin it" has got me into more trouble on a quad, maybe I dont have enough power!!!!!

Falling for that 'My quad is better than your quad' or ' I bet u can't do that' routine. Usually something goes bad. Especially if you succeed in the challenge, then everyone else has to try

I thought that was the fun part of quadding or sledding for that matter.

For the most part it is, but on occasion it goes wrong. Especially when someone says my Honda is better than your Yamaha, and I say Hold my beer and watch this. Next thing I know I'm strapped to a stretcher, shoved in an ambulance and asking how long will it take to get to town. There's a huge gap in my memory and the bit I remember is very fuzzy.

In the event that the operator is brand new this can be deadly. Someone who has no skill, on a machine that is full of Horsepower creates many a disaster I'm seeing.

I think putting a kid on a quad before they have learned how to ride a childs dirt bike...if they learn to ride two wheels first they learn to pay attention, watch where they are going and balance. I have seen a lot of kids hurt on quads over the years due to the fact that they can look behind etc and not fall over causing crashs with objects. Teach them two wheels and move to four wheels when they are ready.

Imho that is a case of too much machine for the rider and not friendly competition, but i see your point and do not encourage beginners to even try and keep up, just ride at thier own pace.

Having said that just about everyone i ride with seems to think i have too much machine or a death wish but i don't. i just crave the adreneline rush of a roller coaster and hate waiting in lines. lol

Ride to your ability, if you're new to the machine, the sport or whatever, don't feel compelled to keep up to the more advanced people. It is up to the more advanced riders to educate you and help you along, not just leave you in the dust to choke. Our groups always tend to "ride to the weakest riders ability" but we still try to challenge those riders and build up their confidence and abilities. Don't get angry and yell at someone for constantly getting stuck, or picking a bad line thru a skeg field. It's all a learning process, remember you were there once too.
