I just received Baofeng BF-F9V2+ 8 watt radios directly from Baofeng US (https://baofengradio.us/) they were a bit more than from Amazon.com but... Amazon.com won't ship these to Canada nor many of the accessories. Amazon.ca does not have the BF-F9V2+ available, but did have all the accessories (Nagoya Na-711 15.6" antenna, extra short battery, 12 v car battery)
No trouble shipped from Baofeng US, if you buy a bunch of them the shipping is minor.
After playing with it with a friend, the longer antenna is a MUST. the stock shorter one is terrible. there are good short ones out there as I have read but unsure which. that being said, if you are within 1 km of your riding partners the short one is equal to a GMRS family radio range.
With the longer antenna it is getting 2 km easy in the city (radio to radio), I suspect in the bush 3 km is reasonable and likely much more on 8 watt (actually only 5.9 watt as tested by others)
In the city I am receiving some of the local repeaters (high watt sending)
out of respect of the licensing rules I have not tried to send to the repeaters.
Programming is easy, can be done on the radio itself, a quick search online produces all the repeaters and local channels, more searching you will find (https://www.repeaterbook.com) for all repeaters everywhere.
common sense says find a frequency that you monitor for a while wherever you are and if no communication present it would be safe to use.
pre-programm 128 channels for the area you are going to with frequencies that are likely to be communicated with in that area for emergency communication.
Getting the licence is pretty straight forward, study online or a book, use the government website to find a testing examiner pay $20 write the test. if not for meeting the laws the information gained on radio communication could maybe save your life one day (Laws I think are a bit over zealous personally, common sense and courtesy goes a long way, sadly that's in short order in society and just like guns, idiots will be idiots laws or not)
In all a quality product, less than $100 gets you radio and accessories and much better chance in a emergency to communicate with GMRS family radios, Logging Road frequencies, truckers, local EMS types or repeaters.
$10, 000 plus sled, $30,000 + truck and trailer,,,,,, another $100 to save your life or someone else's is a small price to pay in the backcountry.

I had to chuckle on your last paragraph. 40 plus grand and a 100 dollar radio... but we get the point.. I would invest in a vehicle mount antenna for your rig.. some people call out at 1km some 2 , 5 and even 10.. heck is heard people call out at 30km.. this is why I'm going for a mobile unit for longer range..
Only thing I'm puzzled about is the used radio above I'm looking at the owner says it's 20chan 50 watt... everything i read it's 128 Chan

AGREED ! Vehicle roof antenna is a must for the logging roads. Just been too busy with the Ho Ho Season to get one locally yet.
At 50 watt that is a vehicle mount type. no way a mobile is 50 watts. channel storage varies between radios.
I chose the mobile as it was for emergency back country communication, Logging Roads and with a side of "Hey dude I'm totally stuck, come yank me out"

Ya I have a handheld in the quad. I hate taking it out of the machine to use on forestry roads as I've forgotten it in the truck on several occasions or even forgot it at the house on the charger.
Ya no way u would get 50 on a handheld.. I realize Chan capacity varies between radios but does it vary between the same model number? I'm thinking the guy does not know the capacity of radio and only has 20 Chan programed

Averages I get 15 k out of my kenwood, 2k out of my baofeng 8watt hilly.. 6k flat.
