pipe may not need to be replaced but should have a inspection more than it has been, once a year obviously is not enough. and only a small percentage are ever inspected.

there needs to be more inspections period, there will be more spills, and more pipelines being installed.
majority of albertans earn their living from the oil industry one way or another, i'd like a safe place to live, not find some weird cancer in a few years.

the old moronic stupid comback of a few " don't like it , then leave" sure sounds dumb eh. a few on here have taken flack over any negative comments to oil activitiy, the flack givers are looking a little sheepish now i think.

should be all kinds of new regs coming now i think.

also think its amazing how the premiere says that economic developement comes with a risk. And in that news link it says how back in 2008 there was a leak in the same line that this current leak involves. And theyve been cleaning up the peace river spill for over a year now.

I think that there needs to be some stiff new regulations put into place to help protect against things like this. Yes we do need the oil thats a given but with the technology of today there has to be alot better ways to monitor these situations and such.

I love how the Premier says no health risks, and I'm supposed to believe her when she says" oil spills rarely happen in AB and when they do it's ok basically.... LIES LIES LIES.....

they need to get a better handle on these lines. yearly inspections are not enough, and there is no way to monitor pressure loss in this size of pipe for this distance. if the farming community hadn't noticed it would have been large.

You mean no cheap way right?

I pressure transmitter on either side of river crossings coupled with line breaks would do quite nicely. I know of some acid gas pipelines that have line breaks every few KM so at the most they would only lose a few KM of 6" pipe if there was a loss of integrity.

true but they are dealing with 12 inch lines no vavles no shutoffs for miles, pressure drop is hard to measure. unless ya have a break, and this pipe was not flowing if i remember right, anyway new regs will be on the way.

Your argument heads south as soon as you start talking about "raking in record profits for years". Do you own any stock? RRSPs? Fact of the matter is they wouldn't be worth chit if it weren't for companies that can be profitable. No, I'm not advocating a scorched earth policy for profit at any cost, just point out we're all guilty of benefiting from it. Even in the tiniest ways.
Profits are fine, nobody can argue that but when companies are making record profits every year, something is being sacrificed.

This is sad, but unfortunately, we "all" are big oil!!. Not one person that stands back and comments on this spill and puts in his or hers two cents on what should or shouldn't have been done, wont pull up to the pumps this week and fill up!!
What the answer is I have no clue, I made a good portion of my living cleaning up oil spills, and the money I made I dumped into jacked up trucks, sleds and a bunch of other junk. ch!t im sitting writting this while the slip tank pump runs away filling my sprayer with my truck ideling away.
The weed I smoke, the porn I watch, and the young girls I chase all take power and plastic to produdce.
Untill we are prepared to drasticly change or END our lifestyle or pay three times as much for oil products ,this will continue to happen, and none of are ready to pay 30g for a strippers implants........
Thats reality, anyone know what a body job charged 15years ago to haul a 12m3 load of emulsion and what the cost is now, compare that to the price of oil 15years ago and the current day price. Dont even consider the gas prices now. On and on and on costs of doing business are escalating and the "big oil " guys are trying to profit still so where does the money get pulled from, not from not paying for the $80-120/hr tech that has no clue what he attempting to repair, or the $450/HR piece of equipment, the $1400/d consultant driving a $95,000 pickup. They hold off on line logs etc till its too late. we are as greedy as the "big Oil" my self included

Some very good points in your post Nytroman, but these oil companies are far from hurting or being able to afford to inspect these lines more often. The oil companies are still some of the most profitable companies in the world.
Your last statement "we are as greedy as the big Oil my self included" is kind of misleading or maybe I'm reading this wrong. The average working mans greed doesn't lead to a major oil spill into thousands of peoples drinking water, but a profitable oil companies does.

I'm not going to comment on what should and shouldnt be done as I have to be biased, but there is a problem with aging infastructure in this province and only so much can be done to monitor and protect old pipelines.

you would think that by now the initial cost to build these pipe lines has been covered so just like an old car you better put some money into preventative maintenance otherwise you are on ticking time bomb. They can twist and spin the story anyway they like it but they are pushing the older infrastructure to the limit for the sake of profits and shareholder dividends. Just like the automotive industry who have spent millions on making their cars safer to drive, these oil companies need to spend millions (if not billions) to make their pipe lines safer.

the majority will run liners if they are finding any pitting inside the pipe, but in this case i'm thinking that the rain swollen creek has exposed the pipeline and thus caused a break, don't get me wrong this is just what i'm thinking, as the pipeline leak was in the creek. will have to wait and see.

we should ask the SRD if it's ok to drive through the creeks or are they scared that we might get dead fish and beavers in our sxs and have our clothes covered in oil what a fu,;ing joke this provincial government is this province will not have any fresh drinking water after more pipelines burst and they let the fracking begin

Best I can tell from comparing pic with google earth is that it was taken looking east about halfway to the dam. View attachment 131560

The photo was taking the right or the screen is where the river enters to the left is where the dam is
The fishing pond is at the bottom of the photo!
