M8 or M1??

I have a 14 m8000 ltd 162 and a 09 m1000 with the slp stage 2 kit(pipe,y-pipe,reeds and pcv fuel controller) and the 1000 makes around 200hp.The 1000 does not feel as heavey as all the 800 owners tell you!It will out do 800's down here and in the mountains!Your better off with a 1000 than a boosted 800!Everyone brags turbo 800's up but they don't mention the price of the turbo kit and what life span that engine has!But a 08 1000 is 15lbs or so heavier than a 09 and newer!And the torque these things make is a blast!!

I went from an 09 M8 162 rkt head, fire breather intake full slp exhaust, boondocker box and it felt doggy compared to my 05 Rev 151 i had. I ended up switching the exhaust back to stock with a super Q can as per RKT recommendation and the sled worked waaaay better. I sold that for a 2012 PC 162 and this sled would eat that 09. I also looked at going the M1000 route and after riding a 2010 M8 i was sold on that motor. There's no doubt that a well set up 1000 would be awesome though. i love my 2012!!

The way i see it, If the 1000 was such a great motor dont you think it would still be in production?? M8 all the way, I smoked plenty of 1000's on my '11 M8. Plus, you already know you have a good sled in that '09. Why risk buying a used 1000 that could be somebody elses problem.

The 1000 was a decent motor, it had issues but overall no more than the 800's really. Its discontinuation likely comes down to economics of production. it was 4 stroke turbo for emissions or keep the the 2 stroke EFI and maybe they simply couldn't get it there with emissions. There are lots of emissions reasons that these motors are no longer be produced and we've seen the disappearance of all the big bore 2 strokes from all manufacturers, nothing over an 800 2 stroke is produced now. The EPA introduced a phased in approach to emissions reductions: 2006, 2010 and 2012. There is also a portion that must comply with "Best Available Technology/Practice" which means) 4 strokes. Keep in mind that these companies are mandated to the emissions across their entire recreational fleets (bikes, quads, boats, sleds, hovercrafts, etc). The regulations apply to everything they produce.

It also could have been simply sales. Not everyone wanted a 1000, and so while, for example, 90% of the owners that bought the 1000 absolutely loved it and it was a bulletproof motor without a single issue (hypothetically), if Cat only sold 10,000 of them, it doesn't pay them to tool the factory and produce an entirely different motor for very limited sales. Instead they can just use one they are already making for another application (e.g. Yamaha putting the R1 4 stroke in a sled). They do research polls for this stuff, lots of it out east. Something likely indicated a 4 stroke was what more people wanted.

That is exactly what I was thinking. 15 or 18 lbs heavier, who cares that would not be even noticeable. And as for the 2010 and up m8s having more hp than my 09. My riding buddy has a 2010 and we both agree there is virtually zero noticeable difference.
How about doing a 3" camo extreme track on the m1? Will it have the power to turn it? I was considering doing that to my m8 but I can't see it having the hp to make it worth while.

For me the 1000 "felt" lighter and more nimble than the M8. Mind you that was with the full SLP kit and reeds and a 153 track. I rode a stock 162 M1000 and I thought it was a total dog. I don't think I would ride the 1000 again without the full exhaust. It made it a monster!!

I have to say that I'm leaning towards the M1.

It kinda sounds to me that the m8 owners like what they have and the m1 owners like what they have. Is this simply a case of people being loyal to what they ride? Of course we all want to think what we ride is the best possible sled for our riding styles and such. I love my m8 as much as the next guy but I can't help think something else might be better. I have ride both the new pro and xm and was really impressed with both of them. And maybe some day I will upgrade to one of them. But right now I'm not willing to spend that much cash. So staying in the 2010 and older category I can't even imagine going with anything other than a cat. So the m1 would appear to be the next logical step.

Has anyone put a 3" camo extreme on a stockist m1?

The first thing I did to my 09 m1000 was put a 174x3" on it. Left the engine bone stock but ran 55/65 gearing. It kept up to my buddies 09 ported Slp 174x2.5" m1000. These sleds are can easily spin that 3" in stock form. Now mine is linderman ported, Slp pipe and dropped 50 + pounds and keeps up to his turbo pro. They are old technology but they still flat out rip. When guys say there m8 beat up on some buddies m1000, that m1000 was clearly not set up or the rider was brutal.

Carbon fibre hood -18 lbs , Slp pipe and can -16 lbs, diamond drive lite -12 lbs, shortened seat -10 lbs , ceramic brake -2 lbs , have a new 174" X3 which is 12 lbs lighter going on next.

Great comments on this topic! I had a 2008 M8 with can and some clutching rode it for 3 years but wanted more! I bought a 2009 M1000 3 years ago and still kept my 800 just incase the 1000 was not what I was looking for! Sold the 800 after the first year with the M1000 as there was no comparison the torque of the 1000 is amazing! Going from 08 to 09 model years it was a wash for weight and the 1000 felt no heavier than my 800! I do 90% tree riding. I run a D&D y-pipe, gold primary cat spring, dalton adjustable clutches as mine stock was running 7800-7900 rpm and I run about 84 grams now. I rode it like this until this year, this summer Brent Linderman shaved the head so I now run premium fuel, put the new 2.6 cat track on (WOW) took out all insulation under hood and vented hood all over and below by the clutch. No fuel box and fuel pressure at 45psi and it runs and pulls excellent! I have rode the new xm's, new cat's and I own a 2012 Pro Rmk(600) as spare sled and I still love the m series and the grunt of the 1000 and will likely have a hard time getting rid of it, especially when you hear guys saying "I will own another on". I also run Raptor front shocks, have adjustable steering post, extra motor mount, 8 inch sly dog skis, updated seat and mine is the 162 inch.

I run an 08 M1000 ( no re flash) with a full SLP set up, 162 3 inch with the geo mod set up in the back. This sled is fun, and works really well, hold constant EGTs all day long, no bogs or lean spots. I ride it a back up sled/ spring snow sled as it works as good or better as most of the new stockers as far as power and market value is 1/3 of a new one..... The tourqe is so much fun.

This sled here, is the only M1000 that I've enjoyed riding. My Boss Art built it, from the ground up.. Cr Racing tunnel, a whole bunch of stuff. I'll find a link to everything he's done.


Absolutely is an arm stretcher, and quite responsive. It is boosted, full race gas set up. That being said, I'd still prefer to ride an M8, but you're most likely much stronger than me.

You can keep a Naturally aspirated sled and still give it oomph..... how much gain are you looking for?
Nice sled! I had a similar set up to this but pump gas and not boosted, loved it. Exhaust and a few things you are running 190 hp ish and its a blast in tight spots.

Think you need 7 tooth drivers. But I think cr tunnels have a drop and role on them then you might not need to but I could be wrong

Stock drivers. You may need to notch the corner for the cooler. Fits just fine.

i believe the 1000 is lighter in the front end due motor position, keep the mods basic clutching exhaust fuel controller AF gauge set the suspension up and you will have a sled to make you smile. If you like tree riding wouldn't recommend 174 put the PC 2.6 153 or 162 which ever you choose
