Seismic dudes where out here this winter, 1000's of new slash-lines to see more back-country. way to kool.



New cuts right threw the old growth stands that could end up as tree stand hunting areas.



There my land-mark.



Glad to see new growth trees that will be ready for harvest in 30 ish years. Pine trees this round. Old spruce trees pretty much had it with the beetles that passed threw.



As green as can be this time of year to.





Best trails threw the trees as they are just like hwys.

Had to back track out of there to another crossing Know about from spending many years traveling this area, water bottle neck will clear up in the run off this spring.



Whisper creek is normally low all times of year less snow melt season, 6"to 8" deep at most even in the summer.



I'm the first this year to punch threw the snow. lucky I know where the ledge is. since the old crossing is washed out.



And it's dinner time. Ye-Ha.



Arrrrrrrrr !!! Dammed hungry I am.



Couldn't get up the trail on the other side, so detoured to out-look over Whisper creek. See's a long ways down with no return if you go over.







More cut-blocks in this section too.





I spotted my night time radio tower light from this side of the block. so finding any kind of land marks is always a good plan.



Can't see it in this picture, but its there.



This is the view of where I was riding, 15 ish kms South, and a bunch of the 7 to 9 kms West of the big hill. Looking S/WW in this pic.

That pretty much rapped up my day at +11c over 9 hours and 120 kms. Awesome way to spend time in Canadas largest big screen TV.

Your welcome folks, as out-door adventures is one of my favorite things too do, most of us in S&M would fit this category.

Feb 17. 2016 Ride at Gull Lk & Mad Trapper Brother Windy Bones

Time to check out Gull Lake, being that there is a raft of noodle heads kicking around it would be best to secure everything before heading out.



The weather has been very good this year, most of the snow on the Lk is hard pack, soft snow in the middle. I toured 1/3 of it before I realised I'm not a flat lander ohv dude.



I packed up and headed West to another old hunting area that has not been logged out for many years. Lots of old growth spruce.



Many of the old slash-lines still in place, this will be one of the areas that will see downed trees removed.



Most of the pipe-line right-aways are mid size, and most of them criss-cross as there is lots of oil wells in this area.



This area is where I spooked up my second Moose of the year, good to see them coming back after the tick infestation that swept threw a few years back.



No shortage of furry critter tracks.



I had time to stop in and vist my middle age pal for 35 years. Yes,,, he is the mad trapper !!!





First Whisky Jack of the year.



I was surprised that there was next to nill for sled & ohv tracks in this block, so I could be the happy hunting grounds this fall.





1000's of slash-lines for critters to move about.





65 km day at +11 by after-noon, main plan was to take in the day at living the dream. It most defiantly was that and more on any adventure that comes our way.

Heading too the Lost West Lands for 3 days of ridding this weekend around the Nordegg area. Been doing this since 1982 on and off over those years, and took on the full time outings there over the last 7 years.

Normal plan is pick-up truck, kooler tub of food, warm riding gear, and quad so I can travel fast to staging areas, Not pulling the 19 foot holiday trailer keeps the rig flexible and lite to pull into small camp spots, saves on fuel for many more trips through the season.

Lacombe to first staging area is 197 kms or 1/4 tank of truck fuel. 1000 watt generator will burn 2 liters of fuel for 12 hours of heat and movie night in back seat sleeper unit/ hotel away from home.
Plan is to ride 2 days in this area with 1 short move of 30 k for truck.

Day 3 is too move across Forestry Trunk Road to next riding area return on 1/3 of fuel for truck. I try my best to limit truck funds at $50 to $75 driving 400 to 450 kms, sight seeing by quad is the best bang for the buck since it burns next too nil on fuel.

It would be Tuesday before I get the ride report loaded onto the thread since work days are well under way, and I will need a day to sleep in. Ha Ha.

Feb 27/ 28. 2016 Nordegg & Area

The weekend ride started off blistery with snow & rain.



The gravel road to staging area was in good shape.



It must of been warm out here since the main creeks are now flowing.



Its zoot the suit time.



By the time I hit the trail it started to snow, and it really started coming down, thought I was at the Golden sled area for a bit. Ha.



It was nice returning to a area I have ridden for many years, and the few folks that ride this area did a awesome job keeping the cut-lines open.



The little Onda did good ridding the packed down sled tracks, but it was a different story as it warmed up causing it to break threw in a few spots.



Sure glad I was packing tire chains as there was some digging going down when climbing the odd wind drifted hills.



Sun come out full force by noon time.





Many micro cut-blocks in this area, and endless cut lines at every turn.



And I found my favorite camp spot for lunch and some glassing of the cut-blocks for furry critters.





Got too like the cloud covered mountains in the back ground, no TV have this view.



Best stove known to human kind.

What a great way to spend the weekend.



This cut line was my after lunch ride that leads to another area, would of had to drive the road for 18 kms to loop around to it, but quad makes it to easy for a simple task of 3 k's.



Next was "Out-Look-Point.



Telescope time.



Pan view ain't nothing like seeing it in real time as the green trees with white snow really stand out.



And the other side of the Look-Out.





Another direction of view since there are 3 sides too choose from.



This is the direction I entered the area.



This is to another area I was at a few weeks ago, big raven separates less this connector Rd.



Took me a few years to find the threw roads, and all the cut line link-ups that one can use to access them.



My plan was to head further West, but the snow needs a few more weeks of melting for easier riding.









Won't be long before its a go !

It was tuff going, so I moved in-land to a area I know that would be easier to move in.

Awesome sun rise.



Lot of furry critters come out to see whats going on in their back yard.



Looks like this area is ready to harvest since it was over grown 20 years ago.



Good thing for packed down sled tracks as it made it much easier to get around instead of pushing snow with my A-arms.



All the trapping is done in this area as the snow is pretty much done,,, crunch snow that is wet and sticky. Trail leads for many miles here, and it is about a 10 to 12 mile loop around.



After lunch that is. LOL.

Nothing like living the dream.



And another on-looker, next fall you will be dinner. Ha.



Can still view the Mountains from this area.





I checked out many dark treed in cut lines, so that's the end of the photos.

Racked up 200 + kms with 2 days riding and 3 nights camping. I hope my work thing allows me many more outing this summer here in Alberta and BC.

Intressting find this morning !!!

I noticed some human foot prints around my truck with quad locked up in box.

It would be a guess that some sticky finger folks are doing their rounds to see what they can get for free, lucky for me my unit was backed in tight to building with 1/2" chain and heavy duty lock that prevented it from disapearing.

Tonight I add secondairy chain and fire up the truck F.O.B. Security system to prevent the on-looker sticky finger dudes from coming back. Best to limit this activity the best we can.

Nothing new since I've always played the lock up game for many years.
Plan is to make it not worth their while at my door step.

Mar 5 & 6. 2016 Lost-Ness

Had another good weekend out West as I gear up to travel further distances in the next following weeks. This he is one of the local hunting areas call the "Deep Freeze". When its hot threw the summer months, this is a kooler area to hang out as the dated thread explains.

These tight over grown slash lines seem to support the furry critters with protection of weather and predators of bears, wolves, or humans.



Its been a long time since any unit has driven on this one, so it will remain this way for hunting season. Lots of new tracks crossing this one as it is sheltered from North/ West winds on this side of the valley. Thick buck-brush pockets of willows that attracts the Moose.



The other side of this is a spruce growth at the other end that gives critter a chance to evade capture. This was a Elk rub from last fall.



You know when your in a good area when we come across these set-ups.

Makes me wonder if Arff or Im-doo'en was here... Ha...



Yuppers, Moose Camp.



Been in this area for many a years, and this is the first time I seen this, so kinda memorial I would guess. It is a rectangle shape, so makes me think it was a very large horse. 16X32.



I jumped the main road to check out the Northern section of the "Deep Freeze" block.



This would be the 3 deep valley that offers shade to the furry kind.



Yes'er, tire chains can help you get stuck. Ha.



Just enough to hook some buck-brush. Extra winch cable on next ride outing.



Winter is dam near done on South/ West facing hills.
