We have blown 3 belts on machines in last year. 2 of them have taken out the pto seal. What odds are you guys ending up with.

This might not be related to your belt issue but it might be.
All belt's no matter of make and of what type of sled being used on, require a break in time or it's almost a sure thing to have belt issues.
Most belts need about a 50mile or 80km break in time. Most people don't allow for that proper break in time. I'm guilty of it myself and generally pay for it in a belt failure.
In fact tomorrow i'm starting my day on a new belt and i know the trail ride will be too short for a good break in...12km before the good stuff.

Bingo. Break in crucial for any drive belt. Also cleaning the cutting fluid off from the manufacturing helps as well. I've got almost 800km on my original belt (not a ton I know) and a lot of those kms have been super deep, WOT all day type situations. I've yet to have any issues knock on wood. With that said, have you checked your belt alignment?

We wash and slowly break in all of our belts. Belts in question have 1000 km on them. Two different sleds. I mostly wanted to know when you did blow one did it damage the seal. The reason they cratered was doing a pull on a Glacier in 4ft of wet snow for about 3/4 of a mile. Belts never like that. Mine went and 3 seconds later looked back, second sled stopped.

I think he is wondering if taking out seals is common. Both sleds are vented, belts are washed in hot water and only used on trails till they get a few km on them.

Blowing belts is inevitable, but seals are big concern.

for the price they charge for the belt it should be able to take it or a least 1k

I agree. Snow was 4-5ft wet and deep, both sleds to bars for 1.5-2 min. And one is a turbo. So back to our real concern: does anyone else take out seals when belts blow?

Its just bad luck when that happens. Depends on the type of failure, and if the cords get stuck behind the primary, it will take out that Lip type seal.

I have 1600KM on my belt, still looks great too. Don't even remember breaking it in.

Sorry guys guess I wasn't clear in my question. All you guys and there must be lots .When you blew a belt how many of you also had to replace the seal behind primary?

Im at about 30 belts between my two turbos lol. Knock on wood been lucky, always shut it down early. Generally you can feel them coming apart before they shred if you pay attention.

I blew a belt about 2 months ago and there was no damage to the seal that I could tell. Before it blew it felt like there was something stuck in the track, I checked the track 2 separate times about 3 minutes apart then 2 minutes later...... boom, the belt was in pieces.

Tell tale sign will be the strings wrapped up behind the primary and you need to cut them out. Those strange will pull the lip out of the seal.

I got a 14 xm just changed the original belt at 5400 km and all mountain riding , never blew a belt on xm yet ... And my original belt is still good just changed it for peace of mind

My skidoos get between 400-1000 km to a belt. Since 2012 I'm sure I've bought 30 belts. I've never taken out a crank seal but I have had the ring gear grab cords and pile up behind the primary. If you can't remove the clutch your screwed. I carry plumbers tape and a wrench to hydraulic the clutch off just in case. When I'm in the pow I will go hard for an hour or two. Torture for belts if your relentless. Make sure you can get the clutch off on the hills.

Buddy blew his belt today 2014 xm, 1800kms on belt and doing 90km/hr down trail. Seal still looked good but some rollers came apart behind secondary. Not sure the damage till we pull it apart tomorrow. I usually try and change them out around 900-1000kms, just to be safe.

2800 km on my first belt on my 2015

only reason I changed it is because it started to fray, just a little bit !

wash belt and clean my clutches, and keep adjusting my deflection every 10-20 rides.

I finally popped a belt on mine, second belt at 6400 mountain km, installed at 2700 km

Was coming down the hill fast at 120 ish km and popped the top parts of the belt, didn't explode it, only cord wrapped was on secondary shim and shaft
