Thanks guys for all of the responses. I am seeing a private guy in Vancouver. If he can't fix me - he will send me someplace in the States that can. I already had back surgery in 2004 - and was pain free until now. Last 4 years I have been in the best shape of my life, and I guess this was a wake-up call.

I have been getting better - but the foot doesn't work very well. I am walking like Festus from Gunsmoke. Not great if you have a 2 and a 4 year old - not to mention the 11 year old. I'd still like to ski with them, do some waterskiing and ride some horses. So - if I have to quit snowmobiling to keep myself healthy -m so be it. Sure gonna miss it though.

Best thing was my oldest girl when I told her we couldn't likely snowmobile any more. She told me that " The last time we went was a perfect day - so we can always remember that". Boy - that sure does tug at a Dad's heart.

im very sorry to hear that, im glad im still young (16) and that my crashes from sleds and dirtbikes havent affected me yet, but i know in the future they will, just rember there is no such thing as never again, jsut think on the positive side

I feel your pain......... I have a ruptured t10 and t11 vertebrae and suffer from some pain every day... A car accident about 20 years ago caused it, and at that time i had several docs opinions about back surgery. I was even flown down to spokane for an m.r.i. To be certain. They all told me i had a 50/50 chance of walking, after the operation, or the other option was to live with the pain as the ruptured discs had already started to self fuse.... So i opted without the surgery..... Have been to chiropractors and physio quite a bit over the last couple decades.... I still have my good and bad days...... So i can really relate to your predicament. Keep us posted on your outcome..............

After reading these posts about back problems it makes me thankful that my back is in fairly good shape. I have had some problems over the years but nothing as bad as what has been posted here. I did something a week ago I thought I would never do I hired a personal trainer, you know to shake up the exercise routine. Well I thought I was going to die after the first workout, she had me doing alot of the weight lifting balancing on one of those cursed exrecise balls. The whole idea for that is to strengthen the core muscles which in turn gives more support to your back, which can't be a bad thing. Of course it is my own falt I told her I needed to concentrate on my upper body and she said with a wicked gleem in her eye "Do I Have A Exercise Routine For You" after that I new I was in trouble LOL but the whole point is if you are able try to do some core exercises to strengthen your back and abdominal areas it will go a long way to prevent problems in the future. Just my :twocents:

Well guys - just got the word from my doctor that my back is really screwed up (disc protrusion with nerve complications). According to him, snowmobiling is "poison" for the back and I should quit if I want to keep doing the other things in my life that I do with my wife and kids - skiing, etc.

This is a real bite - because I had big plans for this season. Was going to take at least a month off in Feb/Mar and ski, sled and enjoy life. Know it looks like it will be a bunch of physio that will hopefully improve things. I am feeling the worst for my oldest girl - she really likes sledding and I have had some great times with just the two of us out in the mountains.

So guys - it has been a slice. Watch for the big dispersal sale coming up. Sleds, trailer, deck, helmets etc. Should be some bargans :eek:

how could you give up one of the best sports in the world? :rant: couldn't you atleast turn into a trail bouncer??? lol

That is the best thing anyone can do. I was working out with a personal trainer twice a week - still have six pack abs - and I still ended up with this!

I know I am going to change the whole routine again. Much more flexibility. Hell - I may even try pilates and yoga. At worst - I can watch a whole bunch of hot women in tights.

i was in the same boat. had some good days and some very bad one's Finlay i got to meet this DR. A WOO in saskatoon. had another surgery on sept.06 not totally sure what he all did but WOW !! doing some much better, don't get me wrong i still have a hard time in the mornings getting out of bed till i get moving around. i do know that by mistake the hit the spinal cord when removing the disk between L5 and L6 i wasn't able to get up from the bed for the day. i was told that maybe i should not go out quadding water skiing sledding and so on YA right. maybe this will come back a bite me in the butt, well as long as i can i will. i guess what i was thinking is maybe there is another DR. out there that can help you like this one did for me after seeing so many other. DON'T GIVE UP !!! :)hope that you get the help you need take care.

sorry to here this. I have had back problems since my dh mountain bike accident and dislocated shoulder. i was told i was lucky to be walking one my crushed disc and boom no more walking . well i got into a car accident 2 years after that and now every once in awhile i can move my legs for a day or 2 so sleding was the easy sport i use my thumb and try to take it easy. don't forget u could get hurt getting out of bed (like me somedays lol:d)

Then i may as well join the club too. Barefooter i feel for ya as it seems we have alot in common like others on this site. I broke L4 & L5 in my back about 5 years ago out at Alberta Beach, had a bad wreck with my sled at high speed, unfortunately the sled caught up to my body and i took the tunnel in my back. At the time i lost alot of feeling in my right arm, ass cheek and tingling in the toes. I opted out for no surgury as many peeps i talked to said you lose the mobility. After many sessions with chiropractors and massage i feel not to bad but definately have bad days. I still to this day have limited feeling in my right hip but everything else is back to normal, Dr. said the severve impact detroyed the nerve endings but said they can grow together in time. How has it changed my life? i don't ride dirt bikes or quads much anymore, i save it for sledding, i love to wakeboard but my sessions get cut short as i really tighten up with the side ways stance. I do what i can to enjoy my life for today with my kids, keep strong don't give up, maybe hang up the helmet for a year to strengthen then try it again until you feel your good to go.

I know what you are going through. I am one of those guys that hates going to doctors, I spent all my life working my tail off trying to make it big time. It all started about ten years ago I noticed that my balance was a little off.As years went by it got worse to the point I had to quit drinking as after one beer I found it hard to stand up.Still I did not go to doctors.In Nov. of 2005 something in my neck made a loud sound well driving my rough riding little jeep to work caused great pain and loss of feeling to my right hand. It was at this time I went to the doctor.A week later I was in MRI for a scan. Next morning they called saying that they would like me back for another scan the next day.After the next scan they told me that my spinal cord was beening crushed and that I was basicly one head turn away from being paralized from my neck down and that they wanted to do surgery on my neck right away to remove the disk and replace with titanium plate and some bone grafted from my hip.Surgery was booked for Dec.01 2005.
After the surgery I lay in my bed looking out my window Calgary had been hit by a big snow storm.It was at this time I thought that if this surgery was successful and could still walk I would spend more of my life having fun as working my tail off was not a life. I had never sledded before but it was something I had always wanted to do so as I lay in hospital I had a friend go and buy me an old machine so i could try sledding.After six weeks the neck brace came off so I loaded my machine and went to the Crowsnest Pass to sled. I didn,t know anybody that sledded so I went by my self. I broke down over twenty miles back in the mountains.As I could hardly walk and it was around 3:00 pm instead of trying to fix I immediatly started walking. I thought I was going to die back there but after walking for a couple of hours a couple of guys came down the trail and after giving them my story they took me back to my sled and towed me back and loaded my sled on my truck.I learned a lot on this day first I needed a newer sled.I also bought a sat. phoneThe one I was riding was a 1979 Arctic Cat El Tigre 5000.So I went and bought a 2000 Polaris RMK 550 fan with 136" track.In the month of March I put on 1000 miles on that sled but had learned already that it wasn't enough so I went and bought a 2006 M-7 162" and before the season was over in May I had put on 700 more miles.
I started riding the next season in Oct. and rode into May 2006 putting on lots of miles. So I then snow checked A M1K and last season put on over 4500 miles.On May 17 on the long weekend while riding out at Eagles Pass Well coming down a steep hill after my biggest climb of the day some guy start coming up the hill as I went down basicly out of control because it was so steep and this dumby decides to turn out right in front of me.He didn't even look up I didn't stand a chance I hit him on his side. In the carnage his sled rolled over me fractering my T 9 disk.It has taken most of the summer to start feeling better but I still have not given up.I have only missed one weekend this season since first ride Oct.25 and will try to go every weekend this season.Gotta beat last years mileage.
So if I were you I wouldn't give up. Fighters do nothing but get stronger.When I walk you can see that there is something the matter with me I stagger like drunk but when I am on my sled I feel whole again.When I ride I ride hard most people can not believe what I can do.
Good luck bud I hope everything works out. I have a lot of faith in these Doctors as you should to_Only regret I have in life is that I didn't start sledding sooner.
If anyone knows of a sledding lawyer please let me know as the guy who caused accident will not take responsibility.Happy sledding.

Wow, aren't we quite the bunch..... I didn't know there are so many riding with injured backs. Keep pluggin' guys. Its been 20 years for me, and i have lived with the t10, t11 vertebrae problem everyday of my life, and will for the rest of my life.:( who's gonna chair next weeks meeting? Lol .... Sorry, had to say that.

I sure wish I had what you call a bad back. With the spinal cord damage I recieved I have shortened my life. Damage to all lower extremities a long with kidney damage not being able to urinate or feel thirst and spasms that shake the whole bed lots of fun not to mention all the different meds and trips to all kinds of specialists.If it wasn,t for sledding I think I would have offed myself a while ago. As I have said in past I feel whole almost normal well I am out there competing with everyone I ride with. Never say Die!!!

Sounds like you need a second opinion, I had a similar problem and between my chiropractor, an inversion table, and a workout routine with streching and weights i have not looked back. My doctor told me I would probably be in a wheel chair in ten years, but that was 15 years ago and I feel better now that ever.
