I love the quote the owner gives when he says he did everything possible -well no that was actually the volunteers that did everything possible. My other fav quote - I let mother nature take it's course and left them out there to freeze and starve.

The more he talks to the press the better the outcome for the horses I believe. The SPCA is bound to rule against him.

Does anyone know what the local McBride R.C.M.P. advised Mr. macKay to do with these horses that were stranded ?

He keeps putting his foot in his mouth. I am sure the SPCA is going to love this! I, for myself, am getting a little tired of his “woe-is-me” story. As far as I know, he still hasn’t thanked any of the volunteers.
People, I think it is time to start writing letters to the editors, like Monika (good for you!) did. Write to the Edmonton Journal, The Edmonton Sun, The Globe and Mail, the Prince George Citizen, The Valley Sentinel, whatever, and voice your opinion.
Horses vomitting? I have owned horses for a quarter century and have yet to see one vomit. I was told they don't vomit. He must have some really special horses!
And what was he trying to accomplish with gatorade and 30 pounds of oats and alfalfa cubes? Let them die a painful death of colic? Or just prolong their suffering? I really don't get it. They are no longer his horses. He abandoned them and left them to die. Even the SPCA agrees that they were abandoned. That is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Section 10.1. If it hadn't been for the rescuers, these horses wouldn't have seen 2009. And just because he didn't have a gun, he decides to let mother nature take its course? I am sure those horses were in a lot better shape 10 days before they were found by the rescuers, but if he thought they were in such rough shape, I am sure he could have hired a local with a gun to put them out of their misery. That would have been a last resort. But before that, he had almost three months to get help to find these horses, and I am sure there would have been numerous locals who would have been willling to help him, just as they came together now for the horses.
Animal protection laws need to be changed to protect these poor souls from cruel people. Write to the MP and MLA to voice your concerns.

This story is far from being over. He should not get these horses back.
By the way, the horses received da thorough vet check yesterday and no negative long-term effects were found. They also got their teeth floated and feet trimmed.

I just had a chance to read this article, he really is a twit.

“I let nature take its course. That was my decision. I left them to freeze to death and starve to death.”

If he let nature takes its course why the heck does he want them back, some of his comments in that article are absolutely unreal. I really hope the spca is successful in criminally charging him.

the task, you see, confounded him
though we think he must have
searched for the way
to free us
to keep us with him --
to save us, his friends.
not despairing, not us,
though starving and freezing,
we’d been through as bad.
we thought he’d be
back for us.
we just knew it.
we waited for him,
for his voice, or any sound.
how many days went by?
we cheered each another on.
told stories, stood close.
Belle wanted to lie down
but I wouldn’t let her.
then my nose started to bleed.
and night-time came again.
so sleepy, we nearly sobbed
to hear those machines.

Charges to be laid in case of abandoned horses

The owner of two abandoned horses rescued from a mountain near McBride, B.C., is expected to be charged by the middle of the month, the chief animal protection officer for British Columbia’s SPCA says.

“I’m optimistic that we’ll have a package together to present to the Crown within the next week to two weeks,” Shawn Eccles said yesterday afternoon, adding he is expecting the owner to be charged with the Animal Protection Act offence of permitting an animal to be in distress as well as the Criminal Code offence of abandoning an animal.

“They’re both fairly serious,” he said, adding that the fact the owner does not live in B.C. presents some challenges.

“Charging them under our act may be a bit problematic in that any penalties or prohibitions from owning animals would only take effect in British Columbia, whereas with the Criminal Code it is absolutely Canada-wide,” Eccles said from Vancouver. “We’d look at both, but probably leaning more towards Criminal Code.”

If convicted, that offence could carry a maximum of five years in prison, as well as prohibitions against owning certain animals.

The two horses, were rescued on Dec. 23, after nearly two dozen volunteers spent a week digging a one-kilometre trail through deep snow to rescue the two trapped horses – suffering from frostbite and missing hair – west of Jasper.

The animals are believed to have been left in the area months earlier.

The horses – a three-year-old mare and an eight-year-old gelding – are now in an undisclosed location in the Prince George area, Eccless said, adding that “from all accounts, they seem to be doing well.”

The owner has requested to take custody of the animals, Eccles said, but the BC SPCA is actively lobbying to stop that from happening.

“People need to be more aware that animals are sentient beings, that they deserve that all their needs be met and if an owner is not able to do that then there are options to them,” he said. “They can surrender animals, they can elect not to have animals.”

Yup, was in the edmonton sun today.... Said they will probably charge him with federal criminal charges instead of provincial charges, as the federal charges would be easier to impose and longer charges, than the provincial ones, which could be hard to impose on a resident from another province. Sounds doubtful he'll be allowed to have certain animals too?

While we bide our time here I must say your Casino Blackjack dealer at 'Snow and Mud', is brutal. Card counting didn't work.

Also, It didn't help the player to my left kept hitting on the wrong cards. When I turned to him and said, "Hey, you look like that Edmonton lawyer, Frank Mackay", he said, "How would you like to go riding in the mountains with me?". I though, OMG, 'Desertion', or, maybe, 'Brokeback Mountain', as I felt a little pee come out.

Quickly, I cleared a bit of vomit from my throat as I nervously declined his invitation, while my heart skipped 3 beats.

Also, the 'Pit Boss' was kind of slow with the 'comps' I felt deserved since I was going $1,000/hand. And, when I boldly ushered him over, he offered me a $200 gift certificate toward the services of Lawyer, Frank Mackay.

Needless to say, this 'Twilight Zone' moment had me doing a 'silent scream' as I ran out the Casino door.

Where............ I was meet by Sarah Palin, and someone she called, 'First dude', on a vehicle called a 'snow machine'.

Whew!! Cold sweat!!.

Did the supplements Bioniche donated make it to the horses?

I received a phone message that the supplements had arrived to a local home on Christmas eve. I returned the phone call and advised that I would come pick them up when I returned to McBride ( I was away for Christmas ).

In the meantime, the horses were hauled to PG SPCA, and I enquired about the supplements to one of the people who lives at the drop off house and she said they had been picked up already. I did ask her to find out who, so that I could ensure that the supplements got sent to the persons providing the care of the horses currently.

I see from one message here, that possibly Glen at SpinDrift received them? Would love to hear that the supplements made it to the horses, and if not, I would like to offer what I can do to make sure they get there!

They weren't dropped off at spindrift powersports. Not to my knowledge anyways.. I thought that they were going to be but they never showed up here..
