Hinton to cadomin to nordegg trail

I see what appears to be an old road that parallels the Cardinal River road up to Small Boys Camp.

Is that this "Canyon Creek logging road? I found another one farther East and it goes for a long way. Those old logging loads with grass growing on them are nice and i'm ok with using those.

Awesome that you seen that road as this is where I seen a unit parked on the Chungo road as it looks like he accessed Marshybank Lake back there.

Upper and Lower Mons is off limits due to the 2015 Bing Horn up-dates.

Blackstone Wapiabi PLUZ in-clues Vimy & Blackstone Patrol Cabins with no sled/ ohv's, 2/3 of the Brown Creek is in the zone too. Crappy. Mons/ Chungo trail as well as Southesk. trail closed.

The Chungo Patrol Cabin is open since its out side the boundaries.


I'll see what I find as it look like a rider can do a horse loop between Brazeau Canyon Wildlife Park and PLUZ Blackstone/Wapiabi. It says there is a Brazeau River trail between them.

Thx for the ideas with goole maps, map books, and big horn rec map. "Ha." Been trying to cross point the lines between them.

Are these new Zones off limits to riding? We have PLUZ zones here but u can ride them at long as you stay on the designated trails.

When you say South Esk trail closed you mean the one by Ruby Falls main trail??

Ok i checked it out. Looks like a huge area that cannot be ridden.
I just need to find out where the boudries are.

Bit of a big area, but there is an opening in the top left hand corner, big-horn map says there is a trail there. That could be the West side access if you choose that route.

Not for sure as I can check the East side since every day is a Saturday.

Yesturdays ride was awesome as I gps pinned every see-ible slash/ cut-line in Chungo, not that many from midway to dead-end as oil/ logging has not expanned much up there.

More info later on of the South side.

Then I did the Small Boy/ Cardinal side that is very quad friendly with many openings, I road the whole stint from FTR all the way West to Pembina Rd, then continued to Mt Park out-look, vis small wash-out.

Was suprized to see how wide the by-pass is since last visited after 2012 floods, no issues going threw now, "un-less" forestry changes the game plan in that section,,, doo-noo.

Todays ride is to gps pin all points on North Shore. Ha

Many kms to rack up finding the better cut-acrosses.

Re-supply in Hinton for part 2 or 7.

Ya i'm do to go out there and " fix" that washout soon so people don't have to cross the river there. Shovel and pick... Lol i already started on it last time but the ground was too hard.

I think anyone who reads this thread should know that there is a group in Nordegg trying to get a large area around Nordegg and the Kiska Wilson forest turned into provincial park status so they can restrict ATV's. If we dont all get involved it will happen.They have started a form letter for people to sign and send to the minister in charge. We are going to need a voice soon.

Ha, sorry as I thought you were a GP person Madkaw, I should of looked at your profile thing.

I needed more gas since the 5 and 12 liter jugs aren't cutting it for David Thompson adventures.

Yes to filling that wash out as it would be to eash for forestry to have a loader and cat out there to fix it up in a day since the side hill is the perfect mix of gravel. The OHV folks fixed it up so a person can drop down onto te lower section from either end,,, need to pay atention crossing.

Young fellow in jeep up top at look-out stuck that night as he got off to the side in the snow and ice. His friend was coming out of Edmonton to give him a pull.

I found lots of trails on the Cardinal side/ North, so I'll need to sit down with a map to see how far West I am of the North Chungo roads.

My plan was to ride in the West cut blocks on that side, but the snow limited my access,,, North/ East face-ing hills are hard to climb even with tire chains.

Another ride up there in 2 more weeks.
Time to gps West side Baldy from my last attemp a month ago.

Ya if you do lots of road riding they burn up the fuel.

When i was at the mine i should have burned up there on a night shift with a D10 and i could have fixed that road in half an hr!! Lol

But the bank is super steep... What it really needs is to just leave every thing as is and dump big rocks in the bottom where it washed out then put some pit run on top then some crush on top of that. But Forrestry won't spend the money i'm sure...

Ya still lots of snow up top. Give it another couple weeks n should be good.

Unreal... Guy getting his buddy from Edmonton to drive 4.5 hrs ( one way) to give him a pull... Lol
You didn't offer to winch him out? I was going to take a drive out there yesterday wish i would have... I always have a sling and usually tire chains. I should try to find pictures of me up there with my old Class A motorhome!! Lol
Man i used to go places with that old girl... Lol

Here's the old girl half way down the switchbacks past the the Divide. I did those switchbacks once in my other older motorhome ( 1970) pulling a small trailer and did it with only 3 brakes... I had vise grips on the drivers side brake line... Had to cut the line on route to Cadomin when the caliper siezed...haha...

Now that's the gooder Motor-House MC. I was in a boat much like that since burning gas meant nothing back then.
My next unit was a heavy 33' V-Nose with living acomodations up front supported by 2 7000 lb axles, some how I ended up foot-loose fancy by turning my truck back seat into North American travel center. Ha.

Most of my days are spent out side, so having a dry hard-shell does the trick. I did not know this till I ran into 58 days of rain across 6 Northern USA states. Was able to ride 50+ of them since my gear was dry every morning. "Any-Who..."

I moved in land too the East of FTR where the snow is much less, and the back-wood rollys are not as steep, "Less Baldy Mt."
West side climb is do-ible if rider buckels down to navigate 45 degree/ or more wash out. "Photos soon to follow."
Or pick the easier East side. Eirther way up leads to the Baldy Mt gates, then one can access Nordegg Hamlet from there.

Was working at linking up Chungo W too Swale/Cordel by pipe/cut-line. Found some neat old foresty Rd's back there "less all the stumped cut-blocks." Forestry has not been good to us off grid folk.

Lot's of GPS and mapping on connector/loop-around links less roads "where" practical.
Creeks and swamps are very dry making it too easy to get around. Different story if it rains up that way.

Lost is the West is always good. Ha.

Well took a stroll out to Grave Flats and beyond as far as Miskiki Lake. Man that is beautiful country there.... Trails all over...Never rode a whole lot
Out that way towards Nordegg but i did find some cool cutlines/trails. There seems to be a few ways i can go but the banks of the ( Cardinal River looks impassible. Unless there a spot farther downstreem to cross... Otherwise i'll have to pick which side i want to go on.
Ran into sime wild horses and Mr Grizz wasn't to far behind them...

Found an old trappers camper out there and there's no shortage of creeks thats for sure...
It's looking like i'll be staying on the west side of the Cardinal river. There are wicked trails on each side but maybe if i have enough steam left in me once i hit Nordegg then i can always take a different way back lol.

Lots of exploring and trying to choose trails... Was just in my truck so so i didn't go down any of them. Hiked up a couple but with those fresh Grizzly tracks i didn't wanna venture to far from
