This is a prime example on why training is a must. Driving the said "vehicle" is hopefully not going to be an issue for your employee. Now you hook a trailer to it and all the dynamics change. Turning radius is greater, backing up is a whole new game, judging braking distance for added weight, watching trailer swing, proper tie down proceedure for load, the list goes on. People not doing any training and having preventable accidents is why insurance premiums are high. You'll see why when your one ton and trailer are cross threaded in the Tim Hortons drive through

I call BS on that, I'm on my GDL, my truck is a 1ton, never had an issue getting my insurance or registration and I pull oversize loads all the time

Whats the deal with a one ton? Its a 3/4 ton with heavier springs and bigger brakes. Can't see a one ton being a problem?

I think the reasoning is: you have to crawl before you walk. First learn how to drive the small things before moving up the weight classes. Remember, they have to legislate common sense nowdays. Don't get me started on grampa and his 60feet of terror (5th wheel)

Just for clarification, a GDL class 5 license is what you get when you're 16. When your 18, you can get the GDL off, and have a full license or whatever you want to call it.

Got it all straightened out, GDL drivers can infact drive a one ton and pull a trailer although there may be restrictions from the insurance providers but as far as the Alberta registries is concerned there is no restrictions other than alcohol and demerits and night driving etc...

Different insurance companies have different rules. Unfortunately this is a tough question to get answered. At any rate that labor quit on me on Friday so this question will be suspended until further notice lol
