Neihbour paid a retired farmer $50/hr to run his 9870 Deere a couple harvests ago. I almost shut my rig down to go work for him.

I get $20 since I'm full time. And the farm pays for my gas, insurance, and other fun stuff like that.

Geesh let the bidding begin! Who wants to hire me the worst?!?!?! Ive been getting $14 an hour but i get free use of equipment across my 200 acres. I have mixed feelings about this somedays. I get no benefits, no fuel, no pickup, no house, no utilities, no health insurance.........the list goes on.

So now the burning question.............what do i do? What is considered fair? How do i go about asking for more without hurting feelings? This is family im dealing with.

If I were you, once harvest is over, have a sit down with the boss(es), and figure something better out. Here in Canada, you hardly make a living off of $14 an hour. I am also supplied with a company vehicle, but I own 10% of the farm. (which includes 10% of the debt)

Zeebers how old are you? If you plan on staying in farming its time Dad had a look at cutting you in in a bigger way. I don't know your situation, or how much land you guys farm or need to farm to be profitable but maybe its time to buy or rent more land and get into this deal for the future. Just my 2 cents.

Ill be 27 tomorrow and we run 4800 acres between me, uncle, dad, and a family partnership. The partnership has the majority of the land but its just now in the process of getting transferred to my folks and aunt and uncle. Its a sad fawked up situation to say the least. Its not that we arent profitable cause the land is all owned except 280 acres that uncle rents. Dont own much against the land but everybody beats their own drum. Dad owns his land, pays for his land, sells the crop off his land. Etc etc for everyone. Seems like it would be more simple to lump it all together and split expense and profit according to percentage of land each person has.

The more partners the less the workload and the better the buying power on equipment. Just gotta have enough of a land base to make a good living for all the partners. I'm a one man show so if I have to replace a major piece of equipment like a combine or a 4wd tractor the bigger the hurt as far as payments go.

I forgot to add the partnership consists of my grandpa, mom, aunt, and another uncle. All of which dont provide any labor force to the operation. :(
