Thanks for the kind words.Good looking herd and grandson. Looks like that young fella has the makings of a great cattlemen. I have a few cows in the foothills west of Calgary. If it wasn't for the horses I wouldn't have cows (no cattlemen in my county just cowboys). Since 2003 its been tough for producers here in Canada with the exception of the last couple of years. Seems like we just got thru BSE but it seems like your new president may tighten things up for imports of Canadian beef. I know that R-Calf USA is anxiously awaiting inaugeration day. Just wonder what your thought are.
I am not a member or supporter of R-Calf. I think we'd do well to act like a North American aggregate of cattle producers for the benefit of producers, feedyards, packers, and marketing, and our products should be labeled as such. I think it would be a good idea to identify and differentiate our products from what comes in from Latin America. There are a number of health and feed additive issues down there, and as you know, our products aren't labeled as to country of origin. Canada has some access to China, and some other markets that we really don't, because of measures you've taken since the discovery of BSE. Hopefully you'll have some benefit from that, and ultimately, I think you'll be able to deal with Trump. It's going to be interesting. Our consumers down here will consume more beef, IMO, if the economy picks up and there aren't so many "chicken" budgets, largely from the huge financial burden to working families known as Obamacare. Prices down here aren't much to brag about at this point, and there's a good bit of pressure from other protein sources, but maybe we'll see a rising tide that'll help float all boats to some extent. Lots of guessing going on right now, and we are probably more intertwined with the different markets than it seems at face value. Best of luck.
