Is anyone else looking at products to maintain their soil pH for grain and oilseeds land? Ours isn't terrible, but has been slowly getting more acidic over time for the past several years with continuous cropping. Lime products from Exshaw are probably the most pure, but terribly expensive. A few neighbours here have used wood ash from power plants and pulp mills in the past few years - supposedly it helps with some other nutrients as well. The best way to spread the ash seems to be with manure spreaders with the vertical beaters since there can be quite a few chunks in the stuff. Problem is - those things seem like gold this fall - no one has any of those spreaders available. Wondering if anyone has ran into this maybe and has other ways of applying the wood ash??

Doesn't wood ash have a ridiculously high C:N ratio? Upwards of 1000:1? Not very good as it immobilizes N. What is your pH? Fertilizers will lower the pH of the soil over time.

For agricultural discussion, thecombineforum is your best bet. Has members in northern alberta from as far north as La Crete / High Level. You'll get more options there.
