Fuel at the J was 81.9. Gas in town was 96 after discount. Get a J card and save 1.5 more. For your long trips get a U shaped tidytank installed and fuel it up at the J's. Website for all J's with fuel cost all over North America.:twocents:

i had a 04 chev duramax , i get 15 mpg in tow with a 31' 5th wheel and about 23 to 25 mpg on the highway. 23 at about 120 , and 25 mpg if i stay around 100. So i usually get about 23 mpg . i would say diesel is the way to go. if you look overseas in europe where the fuel prices are high , they all run diesels. So it wont be long before we are doing the same. i just bought a new 07 duramax and hope i get about the same. And about the price difference i just traded it in and got $7,000 more than my dad did for his and his was the same year , the only difference was he had leather and gas, & i had cloth and a diesel . oh yeah i had 50,000 more km than him. i figure i got my moneys worth. i had a chip in mine

You are absolutely right. At today's (in town) prices the diesel option just doesn't make economic sense. But as BBToys pointed out - the "J" is always good for a $0.18 less than in town. We should see a slide in the diesel price (I think) over the next 12 months as some extra refining capacity comes on board.

Since I rodeo in the summer, I have put a lot of miles haulling over the years. To me - it is a comfort thing. If all you are going to pull is a sled trailer - a gasser is great. Better performance in the winter as well. I don't like the Ford V-10 - a little unrefined for my tastes. The GMC 8.1 with the Allison is a pretty good towing package. I remember when it was the combo to have when it first came out. A lot of guys ditched the Ford 7.3's at that time to tow with them - as the Duramax had just come out and was unproven. Then the Duramax was the next best , and on and on etc.

Depending on what kind of 5th wheel you get - you won't get the same GCWR out of a gasser - even with the same axle ratio as a diesel. Some of those new toy haulers have already pushed the limits with a one ton. And the torque of the diesel really shines in the long pulls up a hill. And it is pretty easy and cheap to get extra performance out of a diesel than a gasser.

Economically - you won't make it up with a trade-in and the fuel savings. You will however be more comfortable towing. Day to day driving won't be much of a difference with either.

Just my $0.02

$10.000.00 difference between a new diesel and new gasser.......... Say there's 4mpg difference fully loaded pulling hard(can't see that much difference, though), and say the fuel price is about $.04 difference(edge to the diesel, but only in alberta) per litre...... You do the math. The diesel would practicaly never pay for itself, especially when you consider blackbook on a 4 year old truck is only about $3000 to $4000 difference between a diesel & gasser. Is anyone able to do the math and figure how long, or what the breakeven point would be in mileage to cover that $10,000.00 difference???

I owned a Chev, Now own a Ford & a Dodge, All which I bought new & all Diesel engines & have not paid $10,000.00 difference to a gas engine...... Sounds a little high to me. I know alot of private owners & Companies who went from a gas trucks to diesel...... Cannot say the same for reversal.

Cant beat the, just change the oil and fill her up with deisel and drive, also never can a gas get the fuel millage that you can acheive out of a deisel

In some ways that extra money that you put in up front, comes out when you sell, maybe not all of it, but a fair bit. When I shopped long and hard for my used 03 Dodge w/CDT, I found that even an old junk truck with a CDT was still worth $3K to $5K, if it was gas, it would have been $500.00. And all used diesel trucks are worth quite a bit more than gas trucks, $5K to $7K easy depending on how new. That means getting into diesel is sort of a one time investment.
