I idle my truck in the winter because its my office and after being out working on the frozen ground for hours on end I need it to be warm to break a chill. If I am coming down the mountain from sledding and I am wet, I will start my truck as soon as I get to it and it can warm up while I load up, even if we are BSing a while, anybody who has a problem with it has exactly that, their own problem.

Also the winter climate here in Oilberta is a little harsher than the Brokanogan. Lol :stir:

I have never had a motor issue where idling was the cause from gas toys, trucks and cars to diesel pickups, heavy equipment and trucks. Cheers.

If a common rail cummins (03-06) idle for to long with out being revved up a bit, they will wash the #1 or #6 cylinder I can't remember which one for sure. But they got to idle all day every day lol.

Is that a 5.9? Or ISX? Lol Honestly I doo recall a few Cat motors in sidebooms and trucks slobbering a little oil when being left running overnight in remote areas... But if they didn't run all night they would have not started again without a herman nelson and a parachute so they run til the job is done.

I would say it is up to the one driving/owner of the truck,
100 %, but still a good question

I know lots of heavy duty techs that have it built into there head that u need to high idle for many reasons, and that may be for big equipment, but not for auto diesel trucks, just let cool down before shut off

Is it not common sense that an engine that is running wear is happening.... cool down 1 min warmup 2-3 mins and drive easy until full operating temp. Thats about as close to ideal as you can get. Modern emissions components put more of a thrashing on an engine than we can begin to imagine.

Haha, i see this thread turned into a chit show and by the same three or four bone heads.
There is some common sense in idling your truck and then there is just stupidity. I let my truck idle at times for the same reason as many, warm up or cool down the interior as needed from being out in the element's all day. Plus like some mentioned, its their office or they pretty much live in it 10+hrs a day.
Other then commercial working motor's, idling a vehicle, does nothing but pollute......but then it sounds like a few of you don't care about that.

5.9's I know of 2 guys both rig welders that had that happen. The early ones were worse cause they don't rev up on there own. The thing most guys with dodges don't realize is that they hurt there transmission when idle ing in park you need to put then into neutral

whew good news as my 5.9L 06 is a standard which coincidentally could be for sale if someone offers me the right $. I figured I would derail this thread even farther because... Why not!? Let the bidding start lol

Perhaps the idling at strap startup came from older tractor trailer units with leaky air systems. You would idle to fill the air tanks as you did your pre trip inspection.

Had a neighbor that thought he needed to idle his Dodge 1 - 2 hours every day. Most days he didn't go anywhere. He would idle it, shut it off and use his Durango to go out.
