U realize how many hours it is and the special tools needed eh ??

Plus u might be better and easyer to pull the motor to get at stuff better.

Cab has to come up some if u do it in the truck.

As an 05' LLY owner, we did the head gaskets in buddies garage in a weekend. Motor stayed in, and cab stayed on.
Wasn't too bad of a job, minus small set backs, and had the heads on the ground in 6 hrs. Completed in 26 hrs.
Time consuming is blocking the heads, removing old gasket material, installing & torquing the head studs, and adjusting valve lash.

U know u have to unprogram it right away or u will have mad and map codes.

Cause now its getting all the flow that the egr blocks off when closed.

i say go for it yourself, if you run into a issue someone can help you along on a duramax type forum. you say you dont trust yourself but... i dont trust anyone else but myself. am i a better mechanic then others no but i did care more about my truck more than anyone else and im sure no one would take the time to tourqe the head studs and clean parts as i did.

If your planning to chip it (or already have) you should replace the FPRV (fuel pressure relief valve) with a solid plug or put a shim kit in it. While the driver side fuel rail is off, as this would be the perfect time to do it. It is a P.I.T.A to do these at a later time while on the engine. How many KM's on the truck ?

Most canned tunners & EFI Live tuning can also turn the EGR valve & codes off.

Did mine last summer, had 270,000 kms on it. Found a backyard guy that did it alot cheaper than any shop, but also took quite a bit longer. EGR blocked, but didn't have to remove any codes, unless he did it. Was an 04 LLY.
I would get the heads planed and checked, minor price to do while they are off.

2 weeks. He worked his regular job and did a few hours each night. But a few thousand cheaper than the shops wanted. Runs good now, I was adding antifreeze every second day, never had to stop driving it though.

Pretty sure you will never find a diesel mechanic (cheap) anywhere in Alberta. Lucky to even find one to fit you in.
