Cyle. Your lucky to get $8 around Calgary it seems like 4 inch floor. Lots of scabs and hackers.I have seen prices on kijiji for $10 for stamp. Crazy over here.

That job would get done for $24,000 around here.

That's insane. Don't do much stamped but it's atleast $15 sq/ft. You get what you pay for though!

Given estimates for job before, then get a call from them saying a guy who bid a bunch lower did it and it looks like crap and they wonder why? It's very funny, and I don't feel sorry for them one bit.

Ya he must be stupid. Exposed concrete ALONE is over $100/meter extra, plus most people want color and that can be up to $100/meter more. Plus all the extra work exposed is. Plus, stamped should be using the same small aggregate to and it's so much more work.

He obviously has NO clue. I'd be curious to see how bad his work is.

Holy hell. 40x80 pads. I think I bought the wrong house or property. I've got a 14x26 garage which is way to small. But at the same time my bedroom above it is also 14x26 and it has lots of room. When I did my garage addition onto my house I had to do footings and foundation for that 14x26 plus the pad, then did rest of the driveway new sidewalks and new front step it cost me $6000 that was 9 years ago. Three years ago did a 26x26 on grade pad with 6" edge and 4" center at my parents place and that was $7500. There was a little bit of bobcat work to do but nothing major. I couldn't believe the cost for that pad. So for a 40 x80 pad you would be looking at 35g or more. That is insane. But it will be one hell of a shop

Now need info on heating it.
I really would like to run a slab heat system but I cannot run the slab directly with a older HWT so thats out.
next option is run water to the garage put the HWT in with a hose bib to use some water, and run the floor off a closed glycol system with a heat exchanger.
next would be to run insulated pex from the house to the garage (maybe 25ft) and use a closed glycol system with the heat exchanger in the house using the house HWT (which is sized to run a slab in the basement which is not hooked up).
Or simply get a reznor garage furnace, I think 45000btu is enough for 650sq ft when its insulated.
Im determined to get slab heat in it, so is there any other ways ou there aside from buying a boiler??

Also any ballpark guess as to how much to heat an insulated 650sq ft garage??

Those are guys that no housing companies will touch and have hacked to many private jobs....word travels fast in this industry and guys like that will under cut just trying to pay the bills...and home owners are the one that's suffer...I'm building in edmonton & surrounding area people spending 700-to a mill for houses and unfortunately wouldn't know any better...I work for reputable home builder but others in the area are pretty sketchy. As lots of them are trying to cut cost and using people like in those Kijiji ads...unfortunate for homeowners

If they phone me to bail them out after going with a cheaper quote it ultimately ends up costing more in the end because I'm not gonna wreck my reputation by working off someone else's work so I start all over therefore basically doubling original cost..

Ya it's easier to do crappy work for private people because the word won't travel as fast. But if concrete companies get to many complaints about the same person they are starting to refuse to give the concrete which is good. Actually if your looking for a reputable company that is a good way to go phone the concrete company they will tell you who has had zero complaints, how long they've been doing it with them, etc.

But the quality of work for private people is generally better then builders, because they do not care. As long as it makes it past the 1 year warranty they are happy. I have walked up to $600-800k showhomes with garbage for driveways. Heck I was at the lottery houses last year in windermere and I couldn't believe the garbage concrete work outside, I wouldn't accept that work for a starter $300k home, never mind a $1.5 million dollar home.

I have yet to see a GOOD job on builder driveway, garage pad, or basement floor. I've seen ok but never a job done with pride in their work.

Don't kid yourself, a builder will go to another company if they are $.01 cheaper, even if they had problems with them before, they don't care. People seem to overlook concrete until there driveway turns into gravel, or their basement is flooded.

This is what I did, I don't like in floor...too hot and hard to control while working. The only trick with using a hi efficient furnace is you need a drain! I'm very happy with it it keeps my 1400ft warm, cold what ever I want fast! It was cheap , I paid $1200 for tin and some gas fitting work, the furnace was a deal at $700. So no way could I justify the $12000 they wanted for in floor!

Infrared heater might work for ya too,(like in a car wash) not sure if 10' ceiling is high enough for that type of heat though different unit for different situations, I'm sure there's a combination that would suit your needs

i got quoted $10,700 for a 24x28 concrete pad with 1 ft sides.

I was all for building a shop for my townhouse but that price seems really steep. I think i may get another quote without the 1 ft side walls.

The 1' thickened edge is a PIA to do, and most guys charge a lot for it, simply because they don't want to do it (myself included). If you can get around it, I would, it's NOT a good pad to go with.

If prices are pretty close there, a regular 4" pad would only be about $7000, with thickened edges i'd charge about $8500.

But then again without the exact details of what you got quoted it's hard to say if the price is high or not.

not to sound like an idiot but why do you say the 1 foot thickening on the perimeter is a pita? , and as far as not a good pad to go with what are you basing this on??? I guess if all your going to park in your garage is a small car or bicycle then yeah not worth the extra cost.... If your putting any kind of weight on the proposed pad then yes its well worth the little extra cost... As far as the pain in the azz, part.... im at a loss, done a million of them and its no harder then pouring a standard 4inch slab, you simply dig your perimeter 1 foot deeper..sheesh

Unless your going to hang that weight off your trusses, or in the first 1' of the pad it is not going to benefit you, unless you got another way of getting the weight on that edge. Any weight in the center of the pad will not see any benefit of the thickened edge.

A 5-6" pad throughout is 10x the pad a 4" with 1" thickened edge is. Unless your putting a 2nd story on it (thickened edge isn't good enough anyway) a building is LIGHT. 9 times out of 10 you will get a crack EXACTLY where the thickened edge starts. Plus that much concrete, can cause settling issues if the ground isn't good (it's suppose to be on virgin soil, but you have no idea just how good it is). And if you slope it to steep, you will have cracking issues for sure.

It's a pain, because it takes so much more bracing, and usually hand digging, rebar is more work, gravel, etc etc. Plus you never get near the compaction on that edge, it's just not possible to pack it good enough.

There is just no need for it, even a 4" pad if done correctly will stand up to any residential application. I've seen plenty of 20,000lb+ trucks driving on 4" pads i've done without any issues. Yes it's to heavy for it, but a regular pickup or whatever will never do anything to a good 4" pad.

So Cyle youd advise to put in the footing around the perimeter first?
