Why has concrete gotten so expensive? I wanted to put some of my grain bins on cement but it is half the price of the bin! I understand placing it being pricey but cripes, its just powder and gravel.

Don't know, but it's gotten crazy. It wasn't that long ago it was $150 a meter, now it's about $220. But the thing is, concrete companies have been so busy the last few years they can charge almost anything they want. Gravel itself has gone up though to.

Look at the price of asphalt, couldn't believe it. You can do a concrete driveway for about the same price.

I should add that a good friend of mine poured it....although I still thought it was pricey, it was way cheaper than the other quote I got. He did most of the sand prep for CA$H, so I saved a bit there......and trust me, this is NOT a easy trade. I wouldn't wish that job on anybody!!!

I was just quoted $23,000 for a 40x60 8" pad with one sump and no floor heating. My building site has excellent access and is 25 minutes southwest of Rocky...anyone want a concrete job this summer??? I thought 23 was fricken high.
Materials in Edmonton are around $3.50 sq/ft, Labour and materials will be minimum $10.00 sq/ft. My cost as a contractor is around $8.00 sq/ft to hire out a simple pad. So $23,000.00 doesn't seem so bad if you ask me. I would quote that job at $24,000.oo in Edmonton.

Not for sure on this but I'll wing it.....Concrete.....$8500.00Finishing.....$3800.00Rebar.....$1000.00(installed and tied myself) BITCH JOBPacking Sand.....$1200.00In floor tubing....$1000.00(also installed myself)

Unless you can do 100% of it yourself, most of the time your better off just putting in extra hours and work and getting people to do it all. If you do part guys will charge more then they normally would for the part they do. Unless you know someone willing to pour and finish for a fair price and your 100% sure you can do the rest yourself properly. Know plenty of guys if they just pour it and your form breaks or whatever they will just leave it or walk away in the middle of pouring. Poured a garage pad for a friend who did all the prep, it was frigging knightmare. Would of left during the pour and said fawk it if it wasn't a friend. Took hours of straightening, and adjusting heights because it was formed so terrible and almost blew out the curb because it wasn't proper. This is with over $3,000 of concrete your taking a chance on......

We've had people rent a skidsteer and get a dump truck and take out their own driveway. They think they are saving money, but we barely give them any break for it. Part of the reason is, we got all our own equipment, 1 person in a 8 hour day can take away like a 700 sq/ft driveway no sweat so it doesn't cost much.

Your still getting it for $8 sq/ft, must be a builder? Then it makes sense! Can't see anyone who knows what they are doing do it for that. Concrete is about $2.40, gravel $1, rebar $.50. But then again builders use sand.....

Did $8.50 sq/ft 3 years ago for a large contractor for over 100 400 sq/ft pads but would be $10 now easily.

And if you found someone in edmonton to do that for $24,000 and didn't screw it up i'd like to know so I can sit and home and hire everything out! I wouldn't go close to that for anything less then $30,000 or your loosing money or just working for free. Material would be like $18,000-$19,000 easily. If it was 4" ya $10 sq/ft would cut it, but 8" your into concrete for about $6,000 more and rebar SHOULD be double to.

Once you've done it for a while (been 9 years here) it really isn't bad, but it's hard to find workers. The one bonus I like is you stay in good shape without going to the gym or anything. There is a reason you have to pay well and the price of a job reflects it. Any labourer with half a brain starts out at $20/hr atleast.

But being said, there is a reason i'm getting out of it and this is my last summer(not sure if i'll do this summer yet). Even though it's good money I have ZERO intention of doing it for the rest of my life.

For a builder? If so can I ask which one?

I just ask because I have yet to see a builder in lower end houses (under $500k) that has proper concrete work, and I am sure even higher end is the same from the bit i've seen. That is a pretty low price, especially for a smaller scale amount of jobs.

My builder who did my garage pad (wouldn't leave it out), showed why it was done for cheaper. Curb varied in height by 2" and walls bowed up to 1". Figures why they can get the work done for cheap. Didn't even shoot in forms with a transit, by the looks of it didn't even own a level either.

And don't get me started on how builders call them "parking pads" so they get out of the fact that they are done like garbage and a nightmare to build on.

I own a Home Building/contracting company, these garages were built for private customers. They are all poured to meet high standards, I am smart enough to know that a poor pad will result in higher costs for the rest of the build as well as poor overall quality. I put my company name on every job we do and take pride in my work. Also offer warranty on all work.

I have built garages on pads poured by larger builders as well and can say the pads are terrible. Had one this summer the curb wall was 4" out of level left to right on a 20x20 pad, there was a 5" pool of rain water in the back corner of the pad. Needless to say I passed on that job.

Cyle. Your lucky to get $8 around Calgary it seems like 4 inch floor. Lots of scabs and hackers.I have seen prices on kijiji for $10 for stamp. Crazy over here.

That job would get done for $24,000 around here.

That's good, don't take it the wrong it's just most builders do shotty work and don't give a ch!t. Until I built my garage in that shitty pad, I though when I did a pad and it was out of square a 1/4" and curb varied by a 1/8" that was a lot.

7 inches??? jesus has carpentry work gotton that hard that simple use of a tape measure has eluded people. To form something 7inches diagonally out of square i would have to work completely blindfolded, and use the old method of using my feet at a measuring tape........Pathetic.. nobody take pride in their work anymore?

I use a guy that charges me 2.50 sqft to place and I supply concrete, and he is very good. He just finished my job in St Albert and pad was 64 x 30 about 3 slopes to pad. Great job.
