Con rods breaking on turbo motors...

Yes it did take out the case. I will post pictures once I've got it apart to assess the damage. This Is what head looked like. Still trying to figure out what caused the detonation. I was running same fuel and essential the same settings as I have been running all last year and this year.

Not sure if that looks like recent det.. And if no code I wonder if that was the reason for failure..

had you done any real long pulls recently, with 50 av at 7lbs you should still have some safety in their unless charge temps went extremely high..

when mine let go it was shortly after wot and had no signs of det.. It was fairly innocent like just a bad forged rod..

grab some pictures of the rod.. Was it pto side?

Just spoke with a friend of mine, had to confirm but he's running 12-15 PSI on his XP. Balanced crank, Stock rods. C112 Fuel. 2 seasons so far.

Yes I think charge temps got quite high, a few minutes before it let go I noticed the compressor housing was very hot. Was about 4' of fresh and lots of wfo tree riding. Could actually boil water on compressor housing! Wondering if bearings in charger are about to fail. And yes pto side, I have yet to blow a belt since I purchased it however there was some belt shrapnel in sled when I bought it.

That picture is from a week ago when I had head off. Only signs were on pto side mag side looked like new. I have a few theorys but we will see once I get her apart.

I'm not sure that looks like det. It's possible that could be some trash that came up from the bottom bearing starting to fail. When you get it apart have a look to see if the lower rod bearing journal is discoloured blue and let us know.

This is from my friends sled. He was running 10-12# at 8-10k on 100ll the week before and the next week he rode the whole trip at 7# on 100ll. He rode hard all that week and the last day heading home he got on it on the trail let off and on again and it was over. This is on a 15 T3 that has 300 miles

Question? are you guys oiling down your fuel? I have my own theory on the bearings dropping. Just curious..

btw, I've done one motor in too..

This is from my friends sled. He was running 10-12# at 8-10k on 100ll the week before and the next week he rode the whole trip at 7# on 100ll. He rode hard all that week and the last day heading home he got on it on the trail let off and on again and it was over. This is on a 15 T3 that has 300 miles

I was told that AV gas or 100LL is good for around 10 PSI. not over. 12 seems excessive. I run 7-8 but my boost controller seems to creep up to 9 sometimes and i have to put it in check again, have never ran over 10.

I do oil down my fuel. I run Amsoil sabre, they say you can run anything on it at 100:1 so, i stick to around 70-100:1. Just a little added protection and piece of mind.

You might be right……but lube for the bottom end on turbo etech is tricky. Oil added to the fuel is a double edged sword as far as lubrication goes. The only oil that would make it to the crank is whatever goes through the secondary injectors as boost comes on. The bottom rod journals on a stock crank have very little relief cut in them for oil access. But this also has the effect of holding oil in the bearing better as well. So if you now introduce fuel, or a fuel/oil premix at a low ratio (100/1 or 200/1) thru secondary injectors you run the risk of washing some of that lube out of the bearings. So why not add lots of oil to the tank to be safe? Well, now you have compromised the ability of the stock tune to give you a clean throttle at lower rpms and have significantly lowered the effective octane of your fuel. There is no easy way around this problem.

Every one of these failures that I have seen has had blue journals, overheated, lack of lubrication. The rod shears horizontally and takes out the case. All have had the oilers turned up. I have not heard of any failures with the new aftermarket rods, but to be fair I don't think a lot of miles have been put on them yet. Maybe Fred can chime in on what he has heard as far as the new rods holding up.

So far i've had no problems. I'll be switching to forged after this season.
