I am considering buying a Avy backpack for Katie and myself (looking for out of season deals). Wondering what size would be best for Katie. Are the 30L too big?? Would a 20L be better?

personally I think you shouldnt put her in anything bigger than a 20L. 15-20 still allows you to pack a lot of gear. Get her a tunnel bag if she needs to carry excess of that, putting emerg supplies in the backpack with the not so essential extras on the tunnel.

Just another thought: My wife hates wearing a backpack due to the weight on her shoulders. We went with a Snowpulse AVY vest for her. The weight is evenly distributed, has chest and shoulder armour, and she finds it to be far more comfortable then a backpack. Worth looking into...

look on avalanche safety website they had the snowpulse 10L bags forsale in the used catagory i bought one for my gf a couple years ago. Theres enough room for a shovel, probe, extra gogles a water bottle and a sandwich. the bag wasnt even 1/2 the weight of my 30L snowpulse when i weighed them, and still had all the emergency equipt that she might need.
ive even worn it a few times now, or as mentioned above the avi vest they seem to distribute the weight better than a backpack, i bought one to try next season

just looked on the website the 10L is on sale $400 right now and comes with cylinder

I think the ABS pack you're realing about fernie is called the 'powder'. The powder frame is a little smaller than the standard vario... it's meant to be a smaller tighter fitting pack... comes in a 5 and 15 L... I usually wear the 5 L and pack as much stuff on my sled as possible!! under hood, tunnel... anywhere but my back! (I got the 15L powder pack though because I wanted a separate compartment for my avy gear and the 5L only had one compartment that I could see..

Oh, and the vario packs come in a small and a large... you would probably fit into a vario S as well...

The ABS packs are VERY comfortable and well made (as well as reliable!!)

I ride with the snowpulse vest!! ...And a tunnel bag..It is awesome!! You want to make sure you can wear all of your essentials... These smaller bags are too small for me! You need to be careful with the ABS as you are not suppose to put anything between your cover and your canister:)
