Most 6l were ok if you don't chip. Other wise blow the head bolts. That was the most popular break down for it.

Bought a 05 F350 in 07 from Montana with 60,000 on it. Now has 150,000 on it. Exhaust, Intake and Chipped from day one. Only had to do normal maintenance, got the turbo cleaned under warranty and replaced one sensor.

It's all in how you drive it! Truck was bought off a middle aged highway patrol in Montana, and i never push high EGT's or beat on it.

Be careful not to get an ex-work truck!

I drive a 06 F550 with the 6.0 just about 200K in service truck application, gvw of 8000KGS had three rounds injectors, head gaskets, Egr cooler twice or maybe 3 times, glow plugs, glow plug module, fuel control module, turbo, engine fan, two alternators. I think it's ready for more injectors cause it runs like crap now again. Chassis holds up the engine not so much:d

Mines an 05 and it blew the head gasket 3 months after the warranty expired.
I did manage to grind the shop a bit on the price but still cost close to 4 grand to fix. Mechanic told me it was common so keep an eye out for that.
FYI that happened at around 135k on the truck.
Other than that...I love my truck.

i have had two 06 550 service trucks frist was 3 egr coolers ,heads, inj's twice, turbo, inj modual, and on and on

the second head all the same prob's and is on its 3ard motor and i keep up the mantiance and all stock i have to disagaree on keeping it stock mod it egr delete stud kit the motor is a decent motor just all the crap ford put on to meet emissinons polute the oil and create so much heat geting a 2011 ford in a cupple months have only heard good things about the new ones
o and i think the worst this about th 6l is that sooo many are always in the shop it takes soo long to get my money maker back darn truck down time cost me big money there is a reason they are so cheep my 2 cents

I would stay far FAR away.
4 people I know, have had injector problems, blown head gaskets, EGR coolers done...Turbos toast...
If you find one that has the ARP head studs, EGR delete, and is newer than 2005, you should be ok.
From what I have seen, they do not start well, even in -10 weather. They sound like a bunch of grinding bolts until they warm up. Head gasket job is like 6 grand too.

I know of someone who has an 03 Lariat crew 7.3 with some goodies for sale. Comes with a canopy. I think he wants 10g for it.

What happened to your 7.3 Curtis? Those things are indestructible....

This is the most positive that I've ever heard about the 6l, 4 bought brand new by my company, not one made it a year, all problems listed above, they all went on the auction block

Lose the EGR cooler, change your oil frequently, and use a decent oil, and you won't have issues. using poor fuel, is also an injector killer. The guys that cry about head gaskets, are the ones that drive their truck while its using coolant, (egr failure) then just repair the egr....when they've already destroyed the HG.

If anyone see's a 2003 F350 Dually, Tan, Crewcab longbox Lariat in the GP area, it's one of a VERY FEW, near mint shape, call the RCMP. It's probably stolen.

LMFAO I love the guys 200 000km and 3 sets if injecters. If you go though injecters like that its a pretty good sign you run chit fuel and don't change the oil enough. Ford 6.0l are a huei engine they use oil to fire the injectors chit oil, chit injector life. Head studs, egr delete, chip, and good syn oil and i have seen these thing run for 200 000km with no problems at all. All diesels break down now they are all chit with the new emmision standards, the nice thing with the the 6.0l once you got rid of the egr and put in head studs they are pretty reliable.
