My buddies want to go. They like to golf and except for the golden gate bridge I can't really come up with another reason to go?

I am more of a out in the mountains not surrounded by a ton of people vacationing fan. The reviews I read online do not really give SF a great outlook.

the 49'ers, Alcatraz, Golden Gate, good weather, hippies, and wine.

And best of all, its not Edmonton.

My Brother in law and Sister have been there a couple of times. Lots of incredible restaurants and the stuff others have mentioned.

SF is a great place and so much to see! You can also take a drive down to Monterey Bay along the coast line.

Ditto on the Alcatraz visit. That's pretty cool. Fisherman's wharf was neat. Never seen so many sea lions in one spot...and do they make a lot of noise and stink! Some awesome clam chowder and seafood to be had. Some very talented street performers down by the wharf. Wives will like the shopping. Trolly cars are an experience. I'd recommend it.

San fran was OK... Alcatraz and Golden Gate were about as interesting as it got for me..I'm the same way, not really into big cities but I was in California for 2 weeks or so and I'd have to say out of all the places I went San Fran and LA were my least favourite. I enjoyed San Diego/Ocean Beach way better. To each their own though, there are a lot of things to see and do in San fran though, but I dunno, it was just something about the city, the people and the atmosphere that set me off..

One of our better weekends was spent there. Ride the Trolly, Fishermans wharf is a great stroll plus a tonne of micro breweries along the way. Fun to sample the different beers. Alcatraz is great, there is also a world war 2 Sub that you can tour on the wharf. A bus tour of the city is great, takes a couple hours. Got to see the "full house" house, the "mansion" house, the bridge of course, a cool 1920's arcade that the rich would go to just out of town as they would sell liquor during proabition. You get to play the games which is really cool. They are all mechanical. It was none stop!! Lots of stuff to do and see. Wine tasting is real close to kind of what ever you want. I would recommend it.

Winchester museum is a must see, as is the warf, Alcatraz isn't much to see any longer, empty concrete building that has deteriorated from the salt.
City and warf tour through China town is very good and if you are there for 3-4 days, go up north of Peteluma to the Red Woods, you'll never get that close again.

Best time ever!!!, go during fleet week (see web), Early October is their best weather (Less Fog, thus you can see stuff), go on a tour (dylans tours) some of the best food in the world... clam chowder in bread bowl....

San Fran is very local only stores, no home depots, big walmarts, they do have safeway, saw only one 7 eleven....bring lots of cash though!!! very cool place....

Well cool, I wasn't all that pumped to go but now I am! I am surprised so many are recommending Alcatraz? I wasn't really thinking that to be high on my list. I mean its Alcatraz so that is the most famous prison, but in the end its just a prison. I have never been in prison and don't plan on going! EVER! I will go out in a hail of gun fire first! HA

I didn't know the Redwoods were that close. I for sure want to go there. The guys are pushing for a Raiders game (which will eat most of a day). I don't thing we will have time for everything. Wine tour is already planned (which takes up another day). How long a drive are the Redwoods from San Fran?
