Id be doing a borescope of the 850 engine. One guy did his after Indy Dans findings and he seen the same.

Anybody who knows Indy Dan is knows this guy is very credible.
Here are pics of a brand new 850 poo engine, the hone is very poor on the cylinder and the coating on the piston is coming off.

From SW, 78 miles on this 850 with bearing seized on to crankshaft
Quoted:

And here is what is happening to the 850 PTO bearings

Look close at the pictures and you can see where the PTO bearing moves inward until the Outside diameter hits the spinning crankshaft PTO wheel
and then locks the motor.

If all the 850's have a float PTO bearing which they most likely all do it will be a 100% full recall.

The bearing does not float... this is no different than the 12 to 18 800 motor.

The PTO bearing is pressed onto the crank and cannot "float" the center bearing that is closest to the pto has the locking/ locating ring thats what holds the crank from walking in the case.

So what you are looking at is the production fail I mentioned before, some of the PTO bearings were pressed on wrong (TO FAR) thats why its not happening to all of them. The info I have

is from a very reputable source from the factory. What also has happened is because the bearing is pressed on incorrect it blocks the oil supply hole in the upper case half and cant get oil to the bearing, thus why some

have blowen the oil line off the brass fitting. Don't freek out people run your 850. This was a crank from a 800 with a press on pto bearing, the 850 does have a floating roller bearing in the pto side. Sorry for the info as I did not

the pic of the bearing till after this.

Look at your two pics from indy Dan, the one that he is showing you the centering ring (the good motor that didnt blow up) look at the bearing placement in the case you see how it is flush with the edge where the counter weight is??? Then look at the other one.

The bearing cant move once it is pressed on the crank, It was pressed on wrong.

Also from the SW thread:

Correct..............but the 800's have a PTO bearing with an inner race.

That has .0015 to .002 interference fit.

The 850 has no inner race on the bearing..... the rollers ride on the crank snout.

The bearing floats...........and when i says floats i mean floats.

Look at my pictures of the PTO bearing... you see there is no inner race ?

Dan

My old 900 King Cat had the same style bearing. The mag and PTO you could just slide off the crank. I don't remember how it was located though.

Any bearing can move on a shaft. That is why there is a locking ring, Cat and Doo have them. Chrisco can slice it up any way he wants, and if the "Factory" says its ok then he is free to believe them(Damage control). Good luck as it's a poor design.

All speculation at this point. Maybe the bearing stays put just fine with an interference fit to the block. Perhaps there's not enough side clearance and when the crank expands the parts that shouldn't touch.

But it's lighter........liking my Fat Cat.
Hopefully a bad press job, consumers don't need the headache.

the pto bearing on the 850 does not press onto the crank. the rollers run on the stub with no inner race. the only thing that holds that bearing is the case halves squeezing it.

Sorry guys I did not see the pic from Dan of the bearing off the crank, it is a roller with no inner race my bad on that one. I talked to him last night for 2 hours, he did not know about the spacing issue on the line and

figured it had just walked over... he only has one apart and it was one that failed. He is worried the bearing will walk over time but speculation at this time. Never the less he is going to grove the cases on his sled and

his guys sleds (because he can)
