Finally got the old jet boat onto the water.
The little small block managed to push her up to 92k.
Definitely helped motivate me to get my big block boat finished.
This is a 18’ Catalina built by California Marine in Richmond BC

I went to Ghost Lake this morning and the lake was flat calm.
Had to leave early after a blown alternator belt.
I must put a oil catch tank, running at 5200 I’m blowing oil out of the valve cover breather.
I shouldn’t of used a high pressure oil pump.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

Is your PCV valve workin? I see its plumbed under the carb, should have lots of suction at 5200?

You could get a Vibrant catch can ( any brand will do...) and a good set of pan evac breathers with proper grommets for the valve covers. I usually run pan evac to the headers but with the wet Bassetts I don't know if you have that option.

Could it have been water vapor coming out of the oil pan once it got over 210? food for thought.

What you running for oil?

I have driven break in oil in it right now.
The pcv valve is working and the warmest the engine got to was 120 degrees and the oil temp was 150 max.

The opposite valve cover has a filter and it looks like the oil is blowing out there.
I’m going to look into a catch can but am also seriously thinking about replacing the oil pump with a regular from the high flow.
At 4000 rpm the oil pressure is 60 lbs.
Five minutes at 4000 or more rpm and I wonder if the valve covers are full of oil and with the air pressure built in the engine blowing through the breather filter?
I will probably put a catch can on whether I change out oil pump or not?

What’s your opinion?
I can pull the engine out of the boat in a half hour.

Cheers

Driven BR 30 is good stuff, maybe the rings need to seat if its still breaking in?

cold block, hot oil is how I was taught... so I try and keep oil around 210 to keep the water out of the oil... maybe hotter, thinner oil will travel back to the pan easier?

I've heard 10 PSI for every 1000 rpm is what's needed, too much can move babbitt off the bearing parent metal but that's probably over 100

which oil pump you got? Melling HV? Do the heads have tiny return ports?

Support Ol' Cleeter and get some of his Motion billet stuff, blue to match your boat too!

You should of seen the line up of kayaks and canoes on the boat ramp. There was a massive group there taking selfie’s right on the ramp. I had to ask them to move !!!! They only could of used the entire river bank , but nope plug up the ramp

That sucks about your windshield
