I run one carbide on one ski, and one cheap smooth runner on the other as advised by a couple buddies that used to run traplines out east. That way it doesn't dart on icy trails that have grooves in them from other sleds, trail groomer, etc but you still have good steering on ice. But I agree for the most part you don't need carbides at all on a mountain sled.
That sounds like a great idea. Back when I was riding trails that would have help for sure. Still "half tough" in a creek bottom though.
