WTF snow tire

Hi guys
Whats the law on snow tires in BC My brotherinlaw lives in BC and he said their is no new law for snow tires and he doesn't have and snow tires on his truck and he said the law hasn't been made yet . So does anyone no what the rules or the law is for us guys how coom from other provinces .

I believe that Oct to Apr you need to have the snowflake on your tires, or carry chains.... Someone else can confirm, and I believe this law has been in effect for a couple of years now

Where are winter tires and chains required on BC highways?

There are Regulatory Signs (R047) posted in various locations on numbered highways throughout the province.The R-047 Regulatory sign “Use Winter Tires or Carry Chains – Beyond This Point – October 1st – April 30th“ when placed upon a highway will prohibit vehicles from being driven or operated on a highway that are not equipped with winter tires or chains beyond that point when enforced by the police, ministry or other enforcement officials.R-047 Sign

The W-041 Warning sign when placed upon a highway is to inform motorists that winter driving conditions can be expected on provincial highways from Oct 1st -Apr 30th. Therefore, motorist should be properly equipped with appropriate winter safety equipment between Oct 1st – April 30th, and may be prevented from proceeding on highways which have R-047 regulatory signs “Use Winter Tires or Carry Chains – Beyond This Point – October 1st – April 30th“ placed upon the highway.

208 (1) For the purpose of this section, “winter tire” means a tire that is

(a) advertised or represented by its manufacturer or a person in the business of selling tires to be a tire intended principally for winter use, and that provides, or is designed to provide, adequate traction in snow or mud; and(b) in the condition respecting tread wear and other particulars the regulations prescribe.

(2) The Minister of Transportation and Highways may, by public notice or by placing signs, prohibit vehicles from being driven or operated on a highway that are not equipped with chains, winter tires or sanding devices, or a combination of these the minister considers adequate and necessary in view of prevailing road conditions.(3) For the purposes of a prosecution under this section, the onus is on the defendant to prove that a tire alleged not to be a winter tire is in fact a winter tire.

not 100% sure but if you live in bc and have a wreck and you do not have winter tires on you will not be insured

its only where the signs are posted and yes you will get a fine for driving past the sign if its snowing out. $125 and you can be held liable for if your in an accident. there is no law in bc that says you have to have snow tires. but if theres the winter tire sign or chains. its an advisory from transport canada, its like when the chain up lights are on for truckers. and if you dont have winters, your expected to chain up just like truckers.

Not sure what the big deal is? If your driving through the mountains why wouldnt you want winter tires? There is no comparison from a winter tire to an all season. I'll be running studded duratracs this winter.A good winter tire is as good in 2wd as an all season in 4wd. If it keeps you out of the ditch once there almost paid for.

Just a heads up for those looking at winter tires or all seasons. The mountain snowflake symbol that is put on tires to signify that it is a tire suitable for winter driving isn't quite what most people think. All this means is the tire has 10% better traction than the industry test tire for acceleration performance only. Not braking, turning, or any other measurable gain. No all season will compare to a true winter tire unless it is studded.

I run BFG AT for the last few years.....I always sipe them but I just put a brand new set on last month and man do they grip......my driveway is straight up and can climb it in the snow today in 2 wheel drive......and I was goofing around today in the snow and I love these tire......oh and I have not sipped them yet but they have the snow flake symbol on them.......oh and I have zero weight on the back.....well even a 300 pounds less than a reg truck since I have an alum box/deck! it will only get better with the turbo tank on the back..... in 4 wheel drive it has never let me down on any logging road......and usually my tires are 40-50% tread in the winter.........never hit or slid into anyone or anything! I do spend half my winter sideways but it is because it is my choice!

From What I know (and I think this has been said already). You go past a sign that said Chain up or winter tires and you get in an accident you may be liable if you failed to obey the sign. That being said BC recognizes the snow flake on the tire as a suitable winter tire. Most all season won't have it.

So you better have one of the following

1. Winter Tires
2. Chains
3. All season with the snow flake.

Agreed, I had Goodyear HPs (stock) on my truck last year was scary chit..... I got the Duratracs this year..

from what i understand you do not have to have them and ICBC will pay in the event of an accident, but if the RCMP or CVSE show up to an accident involving you (guy or girl without winter tires) you can be charged with any number of crimes. the one i have heard of is driving without due care and attension.

i always run winters. this year put them on a week late and had to drive the pine pass with ice and snow, not fun and i have good all terrian tires for summer and 1500lbs in the box.

Just put on the new Durtracs yesterday! And heading to Golden in a couple of weeks for a ride. I have had crappy tires on trucks n the past and good tires are so worth it.

I will be running winter rubber this year (studded nokian hakapillitta's) i drove on the dick cepek mud terrains last year and SKETCH!!!!!! even if its not law i would do it a set of tires is cheaper then a write off ...... BARRY COME ON!!!!! super charged the apex but no winter rubber, leave the kids at home for a few trips that should save you enough cash for a pretty skookum set of winter rubber.

I just cant see how I would live with myself if I cheaped out on decent winter tires then had an accident because the truck got away on me in a slide and took somebody's life or injured them. Im a decent driver but have seen a few brutal winter road accidents around the Kootenays, fawck that scene be as safe as you can out there. Wrecked trucks and injuries suck big time. just my 2c............
