Cheap (alternative): get a Garmin 60CSx and use 2 memory cards, one with topo maps & one with the latest Metroguide on it.
Newest: if you'd like the latest in handhelds then get a Garmin GPSMAP 62s or 62st (t for topo maps loaded oem).

I have a 60CS (older than the CSx), bought Metroguide v4.0 for route finding back when I purchased my gps. Since then Garmin has come out with Metroguide v5.0, an updated version. But if you live in Calgary Metroguide v5.0 will still be dated as roads are changing faster than the software...
Looked at two programs at a US University years ago, one was an Engineering Physics degree program, the second was an Aerospace Engineering degree. Couldn't afford to go then, would still like to try one.
