I know that Go Pro has a huge share of the market, but always hated the mounting options. I have had a couple different Drift cameras and have been really happy. Low profile mounting & love the stop / start wristband (wrap it around my handlebars).

If he's an experienced rider or heavy, he might grow out of a 600 quickly. Any of the fuel injected sleds are a good option and newer chassis sleds are a lot easier to handle than the older sleds.

The cable scratchers aren't the answer either. Barely put any pressure on the snow after some time.
If you go with cable scratchers, keep them down when in storage so they don't lose their original shape as fast.
