Well here in Calgary deerfoot is 100 in places people still do 120 and Stoney trail is a 100 and are doing 120 in the mornings. So let's say they put it up to 120 people will be doing 140 lol. So I'm not convinced putting it up that it would help much

I drive fast on highway when can actually save time! Set cruise at 138 so don't get truck impounded. I think 110 is highest should be. Then everyone goes 120 anyways.

We have a speed limit of 90km outa town. Now in the winter some will be doing 70-80 km till they hit the 80km zone. Why is it they need to slow to 60-70 km...if the road is good enough to do 80 in a 90 km zone then why must we slow to 60 km in the 80 km zone....people it's the same road!!!
that being said on the other side of the fence maybe your right, people will take more if it's given...I just find the masses I fallow at 100km in the 80 km zone keep the traffic flow moving with out road rage. Now the people that hold up the masses I'm seeing people passing and taking chances to get by. Not sure what's safer, a slow driver or a fast well flowing trafic. No silly passing.
my two cents

There was a video out a while ago about artificially low speed limits for the purpose of revenue generation.

I generally drive the 10% that the cops will give us; 120 in the 110 zones and 110 in the 100 zones, more or less. This naturally depends on road conditions and traffic. The increase on the Coq to 120 will be a night mare on nearly anything other than a blue bird summer day, IMHO. It is a great highway and people should be able to drive the 120 with no trouble but you can't fix stupid. Winter driving on the Coq is a challenge on a good day with the snow dust from the high flying truckers and the packed snow and black ice.

I do wish there would be more enforcement in the high traffic areas. Maybe the cops don't see the need?

They moved the speeds up here from 90 to 100 , yet there is still old farts and dirka dirkas that do 80 or less every day, clear blue sky's

Everyone that is trying to pass these slow poaks unless on a passing lane, is taking a chance forsure... And the traffic piles up so fast behind them it's nuts

Also the slow people in the fast lane.. don't get me started lol

I hope they enforce this, like they say they are

I think the highway speed limits are fine. I do think the ones in Edmonton need to be bumped up 10-20 kmh, and school zones be brought back to where they were for years.

There was a video out a while ago about artificially low speed limits for the purpose of revenue generation.

There seems to be two separate issues: 1) Posting a proper and reasonable limit; and 2) Providing reasonable enforcement.

Under #1, most of of have been in areas where the limit seems just too low for no apparent reason. This is not a real issue IMO assuming you do not have law enforcement using this as an area to generate revenue. I for one strongly suspect this is a strategy with at least some detachments. Most often I see these in a "construction zone" where no work has commenced (and often doesn't for weeks after signs go up) or the work is effectively done (or abandoned for an extended period of time - say 24 hours or more). I also strongly suspect that law enforcement is not aware of what construction signage is supposed to look like - there is a particular order for signs and prescribed spacing. Maybe they should enforce proper signage by ticketing improper signage combined with some legislation better prescribing how signage must be maintained during periods of halted construction.

2. Reasonable enforcement: I think depends a bit where you are and road conditions. A beautiful clear day with good road conditions should allow that 10% or so margin overall EXCEPT in intersections where people are more prone to making mistakes and in school zones where kids may just dart out despite everyone's efforts to educate/control them. If there is an area where the signage is too low for God knows what reason, maybe enforcement shouldn't spend much time in the area and allow a bigger margin - say 15-20%.

I suggest a mandatory annual vehicle inspection and driver aptitude test when registering your vehicle, the result of which would be a Green, Yellow, or Red sticker on your plate.

Green:
Your vehicle is in safe enough running order and adequately equipped to travel at speed. Your driving ability is also adequate for driving at speed. Please feel free to disregard all speed limit signs at your own discretion except in construction or school zones.
Yellow:
Either your vehicle or driving skills are not adequate to exceed posted speed limits. Additionally, being caught in the passing lane when not passing will carry an immediate 3 day suspension.
Red:
Your vehicle is a POS and you are a moron. Under no circumstances should you attempt to drive where the posted speed limit is more than 50km/h. Backing and parallel parking are both out of the question. Failure to comply with these limitations carries a maximum penalty of being sent back to your own country.

Yep I feel they should spend more time ticketing the slow drivers then nailing some joe for doing 100km in a 90 zone on a blue bird day. After all isn't it a hwy and not a bike lane....Oh there's another problem, since when did our mothers tell us to go ride our bike on the freeway? Isn't that what the flipping park is for, so why is it I need to play dodge the bicyicalist now. Are people just slowly getting stupider. Your Gona loose mr. Bike guy if you get clipped.
