I have read several posts on dootalk about fraying oil cables and when I pulled my bottom end out yesterday to install the new shortblock mine was frayed as well. it was very obvious as to the cause of the fraying, the angle that the cable comes out of the anchored end causes the cable to rub on the threaded end as the oil pump arm travels through it's motion.

there is a slight bend on the end of the bracket where the cable is anchored and that causes the cable to come out of the sheath at an upward angle, and gets worse as the cable is pulled to move the arm. I am going to bend this bracket so it is straight and the cable doesn't rub. when my new cable comes in I will take some pics of the current way it is mounted to cause the fray, as well as after pics when I straighten the bracket to solve the problem.

I noticed the slight bend too. Not sure why ski-doo bent it like that unless it needed to get by something else.....

doesn't look like it would interfere with anything there if it was straight, there is nothing other than vac lines and the oil line close to it. it looks to me as if they did it so the cable was straight at rest.

yeah man. the dealer is just replacing them....what good does that do except guarantee they will be back there in a few years for the same thing? something has to be done to remedy this, ridiculous to just slap a new one on and call 'er good.

no, I did a quick search to see if there was a thread about it and 4 came up but none mentioning why it was happening.

looks like '09 too, one of them in the shop in PR with a frayed cable. bracket is exactly the same as the '08

Maybe its done on purpose so the dealers have work to do on these sleds. We should look into getting this changed for models future. Just think $100.00 for parts, and probably 3 hours labour.

The cable was updated twice according to the parts fiche, once in 09, and then again in 2010. I'm hoping the updated 2010 cable will actually last....

the only way that an updated cable will resolve the issue is if it somehow changes the angle the cable comes out of the threaded end, that goes into the bracket. had to work today so I couldn't go and pick up the new one. I am anxious to see the new updated cable....if it's just a plastic sheath around the cable it too will eventually wear through and be metal to metal contact causing the same problem.

It is just a plastic sheath. I just did mine, while doing a top end. I was furious with the dumb ch!t who designed this at brp. Without taking the bottom end off the mounts there was no room for my hands in there.

I did mine a few weeks ago. What a PAIN IN THE AZZ!! I did however, find an easy way to access the pump from beneath.
Just remove the front cooler with a rock.. LOL it's all open back there now.

I haven't looked closely, but took a pic of the pump from inside the tunnel, looks doable. I will let you all know if this is, when I put my new cooler in.

9 rivets, and 2 hose clamps, and viola!

just a heads up....my cable came in and it's the exact same as the one I took off. got them to check the parts #'s for the 09 and lo and behold, updated cable for '09 thru '11 but '08 part number remains the same. they ordered me in the updated cable, will report back if it will work as no one we talked to at BRP could say for sure.

it will work
excellent....she (partsgirl) is going to let me compare the two for lever throw and length to be certain. wonder why BRP wouldn't have updated the '08 cable in the parts fiche....

If you look at the parts fiche on any website other than Ski-doo, the updated cable is on there for the 08's, but Ski-doo doesn't put the updates on their public site. Not sure whether the parts person screwed up your cable or what....

nope, I was standing right there when she pulled it up on the fiche at the dealership. we checked the BUDS system for any updates or bulletins regarding the '08 cable....we even called the BRP dealer "help" line to ask about it and the francophone on the other end had no reason or idea why the '08 cable number wasn't updated, or if the updated cable would work on the '08. the partsgirl at my dealer is awesome, she can pull parts numbers out of her head for a lot of stuff and treats me VERY well. she is not the problem.

either way i dont see this cable being an issue so long as there is no rubbing it should last forever.

the cable i put on one of the 08s this summer also had no cover
