Was out riding yesterday, and started to notice a seriously “tinny” sound coming from what sounded like my clutch. It only happens when under a load, and between 7-7500rpm. Then the sound is gone. Had another guy ride it and he agreed, sounds like it’s coming from the clutch, but is too “tinny” sounding to be from the clutch. Tore open side panel, nothing loose, no dangling springs, clutch/belt cover rattles a bit, but even with it off, take it for a ride and get this “tinny” sound seeming to come from the clutch. Lift up the back of the sled and run the clutch through its shifting, and the sound is gone, it only seems to happen when under a load. Sled is running great and clutch is shifting fine, everything seems tight.

Just thought I’d check and see if anyone had ever had something like this before I start tearing apart the clutches. Thanks.

how many km? whats the clutch service history

sled has 2500 miles. Rooster built clutch kit put in at 1200 miles, just before I bought it at 1400 miles. I blow out primary/secondary clutch every weekend, and pull primary apart and clean it every 3rd ride in the mtns. So probably every 100 miles. Primary had been apart and cleaned just prior to this ride as I’d blown a belt the previous weekend after towing a buddy the day before. Did put an older 377 belt on it, but is in good shape, adjusted deflection properly. I have primary apart now and all seems ok, but going to replace primary spring, rollers and buttons when Doo shop opens tomorrow. Thanks for any help/suggestions guys. Jay

Ok guys, yesterday replaced belt with a unused Doo 391, replaced rollers and buttons on primary. Inspected primary and secondary spring, with no apparent issues. Got sled out for a rip today, “tinny” sound still present. Again, still on acceleration, nothing on deceleration, and only when sled is under a load. Did not do it yesterday while on the stand in garage. Read on Dootalk that someone with an issue sort of like this, and it was their electric start spinning out and catching the ring gear. Inspected that and can’t find any evidence of shiny ground down teeth. Really getting frustrated trying to track this down, and trying to avoid a major breakdown in the back country. Any other suggestions guys??

Yes my buddy had Xp that the starter drive spring was too weak and would randomly touch the ring gear

What about rpm now with new stuff??

with what you have looked at and done already with clutch and belt etc if there was no change then i would look close at starter drive. seen and heard this before.another thing may sound stupid but have seen brake shield cracked from people kicking snow, and will cause a noise like your describing, whatever you find will be interested to hear

Could be exhaust pipe coverings cracked also.
Only making noise under torgue so it’s when motor is twisting a bit is my guess.

Thanks for suggestions everyone. Will pull starter off today and get it out for a rip and see if it changes things. Will also take a look at the brake shield, as I am a big snow kicker when having to do any trail riding, so I could certainly see myself having kicked the crap out of the brake shield. Thanks again and will report back the results.

Maybe check the ring gear on the clutch.. thinking you probably have being that you had the clutch apart already. Buddy of mine had his loosen off and took a bit to find it/figure out the noise.

Well guys, thanks for all the help. Looks like it was the starter. Pulled electric start off and got it out for a rip yesterday, rode about 8.5 miles and was able to find some good snow to put it under a load, and my annoying little noise is gone. Really wasn’t a lot of tooth chipping on the ring gear, so it wasn’t terribly obvious. Will put in the rebuild parts for starter, and get that back in and looks like I should be good to go for the last few rides this spring. Thanks again everyone!
