You may be right but not all the Avy Deaths this year or any other year in fact are due to stupidity!! Some are just accidents. Hope if your ever in an accident you have time to wonder if its Karma from comments like the one you just made!

My comments are just directed to those that make the stupid decision to play on unsafe slopes. My paint brush is directed at all the parking lot hero's, dip****s blasting around on their quads without helmets, jackasses flying up and down the hwy's 20 to 30 km's above posted speed limits making risky passes with the HID's and fog lights on and the tailgaters who seem to be in a hurry to get nowhere fast.

Here is a thought, how about for those who choose to ride with a guided group or any group have a little more concideration for those in that group.
While your having a blast of a time in a QUESTIONABLE safe riding spot, the rest of the group is wondering if they will have to get a hold of SARs. Plus have to deal with your rescue or worst recovery.
If you signup to ride with a group........play by the group rules, fallow your guides direction. If you can't do that, then don't signup for a group ride, that way you can govern your own action without putting unwanted stress on the others.

Fair enough Crazy Wheeler. And I agree with you on these points. I am a little sensitive to some of the comments of people making stupid decisions as one of the Avy deaths this year was a good buddy of mine. A very informed carefully educated individual who made the right choices where to ride and unfortunately got caught in a spot even now I can't understand why it happened as I have chosen the same area numerous times when I felt it was unsafe up on the hills. Your original reply just struck a cord with me.

Lund I commend you on staying with these guys. You put yourself in a very stressful situation that I definitely would not want to be in. There should be a clause in a guide contract that says if the guide feels his group isn't listening or endangers others that you can break the agreement and leave them on their own. But then again we would probably be relying on S&R Volunteers to go more retrievals. I really don't know what the answer is

In our group it's not how many feel comfortable in an area it's how many don't. If one guy speaks up that he doesn't think we should go or has a bad feeling about something we all turn around. No questions asked. Rather ride another day than even ruin one guys day by feeling freaked out. Even if nothing happened!

I can truly testify to Vipers comment here as I have road with him and his groups numerous times and I have even spoke up a couple times not liking the situation and he had no problem hitting a different area... Like said here wish more peeps spoke up before **** happens... Well said Viper !!!

I did drop in there to check it out as they told me it would be ok to ride in and yes it was very inviting with extremely deep snow among tree's but a definite terrian trap as the upper shelf and slope were heavily loaded.
I went back to the group and we all patiently waited, even though i tried to advise these individuals against it. The funny part is the younger of the three understood and acknowledge the avy dangers of this weekend, but still went. The other two did not feel there was any danger.
I guess thats like telling your boss or math teacher, they don't know what they are talking about....but you do.
Glad no every one was ok.

I am not very good at putting thoughts to words..Probably 50% of the things I type get deleted and never get posted, this might be one of them....... I am not numb about it as every story is different and I like to give the deceased the benefit of the doubt. This year has been a weird one regarding snow conditions. Stuff that should be safe isn't. Still not an excuse for getting caught in one...... but the tobogganers, the snow shoers. This just isn't normal..Or maybe it is the new normal???

As a person with major claustrophobic issues I'm not so worried about the avalanche as much as getting trapped in one if that makes any seance. The terror I would go through being in one would wreck me for life IF i survived. I have only been out twice this year. We are trying to get some people together for this weekend and also the following weekend. You will bet your a$$ i will be staying well away from anything that looks remotely sketchy. More likely just stick to trail riding.

People are still as this thread proves making poor decisions. I almost do not want to log onto S&M in fear the next avy story is going to be about one of our own on the site (they are all one of our own). Is it just a mater of time? I want no part of it. The thread about what would you do if you seen some idiots on the hill being dumb really gets to me.

One other thing I would love to know is..... How many of the unfortunate had Avalanche training. Some of them? None of them? Are we making bad decisions? Or making uninformed decisions? Maybe it doesn't matter.......

Honestly Why would my thread about what would you do really bother you? It wasn't so much about me it was about putting my kids in danger for some dumba$$es decisions. Sorry if I was concerned for my family.

This is why I don't post much. I come off wrong, don't explain things well. I should have elaborated. I agree with you 100%. I myself ride with my daughter and do not want to be put in that position, that is what gets to me, not your thread....

No worries! Half the threads on here people take what is said out of context. Its hard to write what you mean and not have it misunderstood!!

I ride with a couple great groups with all levels of skills. That said, we are pretty conservative and we stick together pretty close. I had two great trips this year, including one with my son while he did his AST feild course in January.
I can say that the elevated risk and Avalanche bulletins influenced most of my peeps to stay away until things settle down later in the spring.
