LOL Frig that last pic made me laugh, you look like you really need that beer.

I did both as a kid but I leaned more towards quadding. It was a cop out, you have four wheels, you steer and thats about it. Dirt bikes you constantly have to balance and give your full attention to the terrain you're riding. I don't really have much desire to quad nowadays. I have contemplated getting a dirt bike because you can hand bomb into the back of your pick up and off you go. Quicker to clean, you can go about anywhere, easier to get unstuck, less chance of breaking ****, less places to hold your beer and harder to drink it... Yea Im a stick to quadding.
I bought a can am DS 90 quad for the older boy when he decided he didn't like the Z 50 anymore, the younger one showed zero interest in the quad. he rode it a few times but didn't like it. the older one rides my outlander now, and the commander whenever he can get away with it. better for hunting he says....lol

Just noticed Booboo's quad is also in the third pic.
my youngest is a hardcore little biker (just like his pa). he started on an old 1980 ATC 70 (his brother wouldn't let him ride the Z50R), then got his hands on the '93 Z50, rode the snot out of that for 3 years until I got him an '02 XR70. rode that for 3 years until he got too tall and now has an '09 CRF 100, his first clutch bike. he wants nothing to do with any more than 2 wheels, we've drug that kid up and down mountains since he was 5 yrs old. he did the S&M Jamboree in Rocky on his 70 this summer, got him the CRF 100 for our annual Grande Cache trip this fall.

Started my daughter with a pw 50 with training wheels but I didnt really like it so I sold it and bought a new crf 50 which is what I learned on, well z 50 anyway.

She went from the pw with training wheels to the Honda with out training wheels with out ever wiping out. I think one thing is the price of a new Honda is getting pretty close to a quad and parents like the idea of a quad first since its easier to ride.

I wanted my kids to learn on a bike first. If they can ride a bike they can ride the rest. As soon as my son is old enough he can learn with out training wheels the same way I did.

Back in my days of starting out riding there wasnt an option. Trikes were rare, quads and side by sides didnt exist. Bikes were the only option we had. Now theres options and people think bikes are not as safe for some reason. I would feel better with my daughter on a bike than a quad.

My brother dropped off a CRF50 last month for my 5 year old. Mom not sure what to think, but Im not a dirt bike guy....AT ALL! that said I think its a way better to start on than a quad IMO. He can ride a dirt bike right up to his ability level and not a fraction more! A quad he can ride way past his abilities !

If he is riding way past his abilities is that not an indication that when something goes wrong its going to be all bad. From my experience wiping a dirt bike out is way less worse than a tumbling quad landing on you. A bike teaches skill and respect IMO. Either way i think anything a child rides is good. Teaches the skills needed before getting in to a vehicle and not knowing how to stay in control. A kid out on a quad whiping donuts on the ice is a future driver that will stay on the road when hitting an ice patch.
