I read some and scanned most of the report which lead to the Castle area closures.
Somebody has spent a lot cash and hired some very intelligent folks to pull that report together.
The financial support is what is lacking in our camp to make the case to keep the areas open and the resources to deal with the unruly folks. Or was it really the best thing to do, in spite of our own wants and desires.
In my area, the problems with the ATV's and Off Road Jeeps has been escalated beyond fire pits an garbage, but now add guns. There have not been any scientists going out to complete a report on what impact the ATV's have done tearing up the place, but the adjacent land owners will begin lobbying to put an end to the access to the land, to their headaches dealing with loud pipes, high speeds and concerns about the guns.
It will also put an end to confrontations I have with land owners following me as I access the public land legally and respectfully. Imagine their surprise when they find me and my family picking up garbage left behind from righteous ATVer party. So because I am on ATV, I sometimes get the wrath on behalf of my fellow enthusiasts.
The attitudes of our ATV people need a serious make over, or all we do is provide ammunition to make it easy to see additional areas closed.

I love riding the Castle area, numerous good times there...
That closure should be an eye opener, I constantly pick up garbage from lazy slobs, most of the time it's beer cans and party leftovers.

Is is there a map of the areas closed to make it easier?

Its closures like this that hit home. Its so very important to support a club. Dont just ride and expect it to be there next year. The clubs fight hard for us and are true to the sport and need money to fight. So many people here on this site know what needs to be done and just feel like they are beating there heads against a wall. If you go to the sled show and can spend money to get there be sure to spend some money on the club that supports your riding area. Through some cash around, ask what they will do with your money. I guarantee they will have an answer for you. The next thing is STOP complaining that your trail is not groomed. I seriously think you people are morons. Probably the same people that drop your beer cans or leave your blown belt on the trails, alpine, and at the cabin. Its takes so many to stand up and make the change to make up for the few that just don't care. They think its there given right. It takes so little out of our pockets to make a difference and probably a sh1t load more brains to make a difference. Remember the bark huggers are way more than the whole bunch of us backcountry riders put together. They have no idea what we do or how big our impact is. They just assume that we are bad for everything.

Rant over

We are our own worst enemies. I still spend an inordinate amount of my time fighting snomobile closures, but I quit fighting ATV closures long ago. Until we, as ATV users, quit giving the other side so much ammunition to justify closures, I won't be a part of that losing battle.

coutesy of Grinder from another thread:

Re: Castle area(southwest alberta) soon to be protected area
On Friday, September 4th, the Provincial Government announced a new Provincial and Wilderness Park in the Castle Mountain area. This is the first park in Canada to allow the present use of ATV'S on the designated trail system in the Castle area, and also to allow hunting. Logging is out. We will no longer be able to ride on pipelines, or power lines, however Environment and Parks has assured us that there will be a lot of money put into the Parks for trail maintenance and upkeep and also possibly new trails to replace lost pipe and power line trails. The government is holding a 30 day public forum where you can provide your feedback and you are all strongly urged to complete this feedback. The stronger the voice, the more we can influence our views. Please go to the following link which explains the Parks and what is allowed and what will not be allowed and take the survey for the feedback. Our office was advised of this announcement 20 minutes prior to it being announced. Rob Simieritsch, who is the new Regional Director, (replacing Daryl) for Environment and Parks called our office as they themselves had just found out about it.

Not Sure
Maybe it is time to find some cool places in Montana and/or Idaho.

a select few have been trying to shut the castle area down the entire 40 years I worked and lived there. All it took was the NDP...
