So my boy is 12 and he is very active he races bmx in summer he does Taekwondo, volley ball and basketball i drop him off at school at 7 for basketball training twice a week before school. Then twice a week he does Taekwondo also basketball so 4 nights a week he is busy after school also some saturdays he does basketball he is always hungury and we are thinking he is burning more calories that he is getting. As most 12 year olds he is a fussy eater so what should we feed him to boost his calories i did a search and an active boy at his age should be eating 2000-2500 calories a day and he is not getting that.

This is very complex and not something you will get a quick answer for. I think it's cool you are asking questions!!!!

I'm injured and not running right now but I know what fueling a body is all about. I've never eaten more in my life and I still lost 20 lbs during my marathon training. I'm by far an expert at this, my wife takes care of my food/fuel needs....

While yes he needs Calories, he also needs LOTS of carbohydrates. I mentioned above I lost weight during my training. In my case I was OK with that as less weight means faster race time. I didn't have my calorie and carbohydrate amount in check. Carbohydrates are what fuels the body and this was what I was more interested in. If he is active everyday you need to keep him fueled up. The sooner you refuel after an event the better. The body is looking for it and will soak it up like a sponge. After 30-45 minutes the body wont soak it up as quick and takes more time, time he doesn't have if he is active everyday. This is where energy bars are great. A big glass of chocolate mike works good after too.
Does he ever get stitches while being active? This is caused because all the blood is rushed away from your stomach and into you muscles that need fuel to burn. You never want to eat a big meal before an event, the stomach can't processes it. Again a good time for an energy bar (important to know some energy bars are for before and some are for after being active).
We went for a Sushi feast or pasta before a race. We would fuel two days before a long race.

As I'm sure you know it's better to have a balanced diet. Here is a list of Carbohydrates divided up into food groups to make it easier.
List of High Carbohydrate Foods

I was looking for a good google search on the subject but all I come up with is "Why cant' I loose weight while being active" not "I don't want to loose weight while being active".....

If you want some serious info browse a running forum. You will be introduced to a whole different world and get great advice! The Running room is a good place to browse through. It's usually full of new runners that are looking for info.....

Hope this helps....

My son is goalie in hockey and they totally recommend pasta before practice and games. It seems to really give him the boost he needs!!

Yea very true, ate a ton of pasta when I played hockey. Mostly ate it after, regain the protein. Protein shakes are usually high in well protein but also calories, good for after a hard workout.
