What about belt break in? I was told you will get a lot more life out of a belt if you go easy on it for the first 60-80 miles....?? Any truth to this?

I read an article saying that with the new belts this is really no longer required. Amer. Snowmobiler or one of those rags. I've never had any issues without the belt break in.

When the engine in my old RMK got rebuilt, I added extra oil, and rode it. Worked fine for a season then I sold.

My Cat actually overheated due to shitty trail in the first time I had it out. No extra oil, It held up fine.

There is still a tag on the ETEC handlebars explaining the extra fuel and oil consumption for about the first 2 tanks of fuel for break in. I'm just going to ride them, the computer can figure it out.

4 stoke stuff, I like to do one full heat cycle, change the oil, and then it is the same as the two stroke:

Let it warm right up in the parking lot at idle (until the thermostat opens, if it has one), then make a nice brisk ride up the trail to where ever we are riding varying between half and full throttle (for very short bursts). By the time you do the typical (for BC 8-20km ride in) up the steep switch backs, the rings are going to be as seated as they ever will get. Throttle to the bars at that point.

You need load to seat rings, and a good trail ride into the alpine, with what are typically fairly steep trails, is great for doing just that.

my Ducati ... my mechanic used to race these 4 stroke V twin 900cc weapons in late "70's early "80's and his motors were good for 1500km on track. his break in was very lighty smere oil on the ring then start it. ok the oil pump was orsum and instantly up to speed, but that was it and he would race these things from there. 260kph from a 1976 5 speed.

In 1991 my buddy went to the kawaski factory in japan. he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the biggest and smallest bikes on the production line being tested with bearly an engine in aframe and the guy would hook up a wiring hrness and a fuel line and take it strait to red line then shut it down, then move it on the production line.
he says "fark running in an engine" !!! if thats wot a cold fresh enigne can do ...

I saw the same thing (on discovery) at the suzuki factory, on that they said they do that and say you should be able to pull it out of the box and drive it.

Break it in the way you intend to ride it all the time, basically like it's stolen. I do with everything ive ever owned with no problems so far.

My break in is usually a hard trail ride up to the alpine on/off the throttle, never holding it at one position. Once at the alpine, break in is over, WFO from there. My first two days on the brand new Etech last year, I burnt the tank and almost a jerry can each day. She was deeeep.

Belts, I've never lost one from inadequate break in. Kind of tough at times to break one in anyways. Drive er' McGyver.
