So I am getting a new computer. It will be a mac. I don't know if I should go with the Fusion drive or just a full SSD. I do a lot of photography stuff with different programs like photoshop so if I went with the smaller in size full SSD I would likely have to get an external drive pretty quick as well. I guess I am just a little apprehensive about Apple's brand new fusion drive and just how reliable it will be being brand new.

from what i understand a fusion drive is a combination of flash storage and a regular hard, it may mitigate some risk with the flash part of the drive - i have used flash drives for a good while with no issues but any mechanical drive will fail given enough time irrespective of the price. The only way to ensure the safety of your data is to have it in 3 places, my preference is an external drive that only gets used when i need to store files, a USB drive (prices of them make it an affordable choice) and i also use an online storage service just in case my house get struck be a meteorite. We store about 30 Terabytes of data on a replicated SAN at work and typically loose a drive about every 2 to 3 months.

just my 2 cents

Yeah I am think just straight SSD even though it is more money having a SSD and HDD tied together me thinks if one goes they both go. Although I am pretty good about backing everything up quite often. I just don't like being the guy to try something new.

For work I run a 256GB SSD on a Dell Alienware Laptop, 12GB RAM with a Western Digital USB 3 external 1TB attached. I run a bunch of VM's and the performance is so much better with SSD. Its really to bad its a Mac Though :p
