The easiest way is to buy two lights with magnets like tow trucks use and put the on the tunnel of each sled. Pretty simple.

It can't be on the side...has to be at the furthest end point of the load :d And if you are over the legal length, a permit is still required by law under DOT/CVSE regs

no offence to the farmers on here - just that seems there is allot of "excemptions" that go with that little green sticker

I know this is more of a "deck" thread, but there was a check-stop in Golden sunday. I got a $110 fine for my sled sticking too far out the back of my tacoma without a flag (4' from tail light). I also learned (written warning) you were supposed to have the front of the sled tied down in the box as well as the back.

As far as tieing the sleds etc down it is a bit of a grey area. I always go overboard and never have any issues. Two straps front, two straps rear.

Yes it's not very hard to reach under your tunnel and put the other side of the magnet

MMM money for a turbo nytro, guessing fancy alum deck, no money for a proper truck to haul it? First of all, a nice new 1 ton diesel can be had for $50,000, second of all good used can be had for $20,000. Or a 1 ton gasser isn't much more then a half ton. It is NOT a money issue, it's people not paying attention or caring about being legal! Do what you want but DOT will catch you overweight one day and have a hayday. Will be a nice trip when your told nothing is moving until it's legal. You do know they can charge you for EVERY pound your overweight right? If DOT wants to write the book they could leave you with $1500 worth of tickets like NOTHING. Or if you get into an accident grossly overweight, you know you can be criminaly charged right? It is very rare, but CAN happen. Ignorance is NOT an excuse. Whenever you are hauling/towing YOU are responceable to make sure it is legal.

RCMP will be watching this year I gaurentee it, they were already doing a checkstop at renshaw this weekend, and poking around in lucille looking at things.

oh i agree 100% was not at all towods my self. i only have a 1500 because living in calgary a diesel would brake me for fuel. and a big truck just insnt livable for me, i only haul one sled on a deck so iam fine..


it was about the average joe where at 700$ a month truck payment isn't that feasible. and right now thats alot of money for alot of ppl

i have a 8' 6" wide sled trailer got pulled over in golden got a warning ticket for not having flares in truck never heard this before has any one got this type of ticket he said anything over 8' must carry them my holiday trailer is over 8' and no trailer place has them if thats the case should they not be standard equipment with the trailer

And the learning continues! Did this dude mean actual flares or markers? Do these guys pull these things out of a hat or are they actually law and some of them use the most hidden ones just to p*ss us off?

I have not post this, but perhaps I should fill some of you in as I was informed they are apparently going to start cracking down on this.

I was in Golden 3 weeks ago with 2 sleds on a Dodge 2500 short box (6.5 ft box). We came out of the restuarant and a couple of Highway patrol RCMP Officers were waiting outside by my truck. We walked by them and all 4 of us got into the truck. My wife was driving and was about to back up when the RCMP knocked on the window and asked who's sleds. What makes me mad is I think he waited to see who was driving as he may have thought I had a little too much pop. Why did he wait for us to get into the truck and not ask when we walked direct by them to my truck that was 10 ft away?

He (RCMP) explained to me I am over lenght. I am allowed 4 ft from the tail lights of the truck to the furtherest point on the sled and YES he was counting the snow flap. Sleds are a 153 and 162. I asked him to get his tape measure and see were I am at. He states that if he has to get his tape measure that he is also getting his ticket book. I wish I got his name as I would like to send him a Christmas present as he was a really nice guy!!! He is also likely to be reading this thread.

When I got home I measured and found the track of the 153 to be under and the 162 to be over by 3-4 inches (not counting the snow flap). Counting the snow flap I am over by at least 12 inches on the 162.

I stated I feel more comfortable hauling the sleds on a deck rather than using a trailer because of road conditions, but he did not care. We also discussed the manufactures of these decks and tourism for Golden, but he did not want to hear from me. What next???

Why don't they put a litle more effort into the thief of these machines and vehicle? I would gladly provide them with my registration and insurance to ensure the sled is not stolen. Answer: Too much work!

I may regret writing all this as he will be looking for me, but don't look to hard as I will be there this weekend.

It's never a good idea to be a smart ass with the police. Give them a reason to give you a hard time and they will use it.

Funny how so many guys use the " WE spend money in your town" to justify not being legal or when things don't go their way.

How many times do you think the police here this???? 100times a week between skiiers and sledders? Probably why they are not so freindly.

so basically is what everyone is saying here. Sell your 162/163/174 sleds, sell your decks, get rid of most trailers out there.. and well hey BC small towns ie. Valemount, Golden, Revy Mcbride. list goes on. will all be shut down with in 2 years because who brings i would like to guess 80% of the businesses cash flow is sledders.

and i dono. i sure as heck would love a 1ton diesel. but i dono 75000$ sure doesnt come too easily to 90% of the ppl in this world.

$75,00 for a diesel??? I drive a '96 powerstroke, value.... $10,000 maybe.

80% of business from sledders???? Nope, not in Golden anyway, Revy probably the same but the ratio would be closer. The smaller towns, sure sleds are the majority from Dec- Feb. but I would guess there is way more revenue from golfers and tourists in the summer.

How many sleds in Golden on a weekend??? 100-200?? There is probably 1000 skiiers each day. How many sledders in town during the week? 25? probably 500 skiiers.

If the sledders left, the towns would survive. The towns were there before sledding was mainstream. It would hurt for sure but they would find another source of revenue.

This is what they want to see you carry Reflective tri-angle flare and igniteable 20 minute flares .

I've seen some pretty big gong shows on the highways before but its guys that use duct tape and zip ties to tie their loads down and hold their trailers together that seem to attract the attention.

Did you have two things holding down the front and rear? I've heard of people getting tickets for only one strap on the rear, or only a superclamp on the front. I believe the law does say two front two rear. The tie down thing is pretty picky, technically superclamps could be seen as not proper, because they do not attach to the "frame" of the snowmobile. The way I see it is if the DOT wants to get picky, almost ANYONE could get a ticket for a improperly secured load with sleds.


sledslut didn't you say earlier in this thread you had two sleds on the deck and pulled a 2 place trailer? That is what I was talking about that is getting carried away, a 1500 with all that is EXTREMELY overloaded.

I talked to guy from dot he told me that a short box 1 ton diesels can be illegall even though they are under there gvw due to unloadeding weight off the front axle . I think he said it was around 35 % , as for the laws in bc well we are federally regullated but alberta they provicially regulated , I also heared A rumer when i was working gp last year that was about to change .

as for seeing dangerouse people on the road I saw a guy with toyota t100 extra cab with a shortbox the other day , he had a rx1 yammy and a 700 mm yammy on a deck and pulling a trailer with another yamm700 and an exciter , no bobody can tell me that , this is safe .

I measured my 162" sled and including snowflap it extends more than 1.2m from the taillights on a 6'-6" short box Chev. Based on this requirement, I'm not sure how any short box with a 162 sled on it will be legal. This means I need 1' x 1' red flags on each sled during the day and a red light on each at night. Anyone come up with a good method of attaching either? Alot of sled covers go over the rear bumper of the sled so attaching to the bumper might not always work. I'm thinking of attaching the light to the snowflap but not sure how.
